I am asking Renee specifically how RM says this should work BUT would appreciate any and all comments as to how you think it works as I may or may NOT be confused by the statement that has been made many times that says
Your RM database can only be connected to one Ancestry tree at a time.
a) That you can have a bunch of databases on Ancestry ( let’s say 10 for example) BUT that you can TREE SHARE with only one of those databases..
or
b) You can have tree share capabilities with 10 different database BUT can only tree share with 1 at a time–meaning if I am using Tree Share in database A , I have to quit using Tree Share in database A BEFORE I can use Tree Share in Database B
As many RM databases as you wish can be connected to the same Ancestry tree. This isn’t a common thing to do, but it could provide for a way for multiple researchers to share the same database (and ignoring the problems of the various researches changing each other’s data the way it happens on FamilySearch Family Tree). All of the RM databases except at most 1 would have to be created by starting out empty and importing from the shared Ancestry database. This thing I’m talking about would not provide a way for a bunch of different RM databases to pushed up into a common Ancestry tree.
Only one Ancestry tree can ever be connected the same RM database at the same time. This is a hard limit.
Upload Example: You upload a RM database to Ancestry. That database is now connected to the one Ancestry tree. You can do that with as many RM databases as you have. All would be separate trees on Ancestry.
Download Example: You download an Ancestry tree into a new blank RM database. That RM database is now connected to that one Ancestry tree. You can download that same Ancestry tree as many times as you want. Share the Ancestry tree with friends and family and they can all download that same tree. Each of those RM databases would be connected to the same Ancestry tree.
This means you could take your RM database and upload it as a new tree on Ancestry. Then share that Ancestry tree with others, and they can all download and have their own copies to work with.
@rzamor1 and @thejerrybryan --Thank you both for all the info–appreciate it–so based on your responses, the answer would be B keeping in mind that each is a separate database.
b) You can have tree share capabilities with 10 different database BUT can only tree share with 1 at a time–meaning if I am using Tree Share in database A , I have to quit using Tree Share in database A BEFORE I can use Tree Share in Database B
The reason I was confused is because every once in a while when I tried to upload another database using tree share, I would get the message
So I thought you were only allowed one—
I have since figured out that if I get this message, I need to go in and DISCONNECT this database from Ancestry and then I can upload it
I’m confused on what you are doing with this last part. Are you actually disconnecting the database? Database A and Database B are totally separate and won’t effect one another. There is no need to disconnect and upload again.
No sorry Renee abt the confusion-- I am NOT disconnecting database A BUT rather just CLOSING OUT Tree Share in database A before opening it up in database B-- reason being is that when you get to this tree share page
you are limited on what you can do-- accept any changes you want, edit the RM person or Show the person on Ancestry or actually look at anyone in the list
Can you explain what you are expecting to do at this point? TreeShare is just for Editing people (RM or Ancestry). Anything else (create ie: Groups, run Reports, etc) need to be done in RM.
And that was my point @MadDog – Since you are so limited with that window open, you have to CLOSE OUT of tree share on that database ( database A) BEFORE you can use tree share in another database ( database B)…
