Where does it get the information? Does it come from Nicknames? Mine says 0 for Alt. Names. I have one person with a Nickname, me.
They come from You entering them manually or having imported folks to your database from GEDCOM, TreeShare, or FamilySearch.
In the Edit Person window for You… Add a Fact (Plus sign icon) choosing Alternate name as the Fact-type, then either enter Oppie as Given followed by entering your Surname and then clicking into Name type field and choosing Nickname from the drop down OR enter your full Given, then Surname then enter Oppie in the Nickname field and then Name type drop down to choose how you want to categorize the Alternate name that you are entering. Or don’t add an Alternate name fact and just enter your nickname in the Primary Name field that is labeled Nickname. It’s all about adding a explanation/reminder about the reason that you entered that nickname or some Alternate name . Was he Also Known As by other people/family/records/spelling/ETC.
There are legitimate reasons for adding ALT names. I have seen some sites/ people cluttered with duplicates of same “spelling”. Adding ALT names to match the record is usually okay and appropriate. Note that ALT name does not necessarily mean NICK name – there are many types of alt names
if they only have ONE nick name I would normally add to the field of the main name
