Adding Facts in Family View

When I go to add the death fact in family view, in RM7 I simply type a “d” and the template to add death information comes up. When I do the same thing in RM10 typing “d” brings up the adoption fact. Adding insult to injury, when one right clicks on this annoying incorrect fact one has created, there is no choice to replace the inaccurate adoption fact with another fact.

Can this be corrected in RM10? Data entry goes much slower in RM10 as a whole, and the fact that one has to doublecheck to see if one has the right fact on screen for the intended death fact makes the newer version less efficient.

This behavior was done on purpose, much to the chagrin of many. The data entry issue ties in to the bit of cleverness that RM figured they were producing when the changed how to search names. For example if I want to find John Thompson, I start with Th and I get Abernathy (because it contains th), I type Tho and then I have Anthony as the first choice…etc.

In RM7, I seldom actually typed just one letter when I was selecting a fact type. I developed a habit through the years of typing enough letters to be sure I had the correct fact type without having to look. In RM8/9/10, I developed the same habit further except that in some cases I needed to type a couple of more letters before the name of the fact type was unique.

I ran both RM7 and RM9 in tandem for nearly two years, entering the exact same data into both. I don’t think I could ever have converted from RM7 to RM9 any other way. As a result, when I was using RM7 I typed the same extra letters for fact names as I did for RM9 so that the typing would be the same either way.

It’s a very hard habit to get into, but RM10 does support starting your typing with a double quote mark when selecting a fact type. For example, if you just type "d and stop typing, you will get just the facts that start with d. And of course you can continue typing after that. But if all you type is d, you will get all the fact types that contain a d, such as adoption. As a sample size of 1, I found it easier to adapt to RM8/9/10 by typing more letters than I did by remembering to type the ".

Again as a sample size of 1, I actually find the new way of typing into search boxes to be more user friendly in RM8/9/10 for typing a person’s name into a search box, and I do sometimes need to use the " when typing names into search boxes. But I definitely found the RM7 way to be much more user friendly for typing in fact names.

Finally, if you enter the wrong fact type into RM10, you can change it. The way to do it is in in plain sight, but it’s still hard to find. It’s hiding in plain sight, as it were. Just highlight the fact in the left pane of Edit Person and then click on the fact name in the right pane of Edit Person. From there, you can select a different fact name.

The fact type can be changed within its category of: personal, family, name, or association

I thank all of you for the suggestions Guess the easiest for me will be to type dea for death in both RM7 and RM10. If only RM7 could access FamilySearch, I could ignore the newer versions since RM7 supports the feature I need. Version 7 is both easier to use for data entry and responds more quickly.
