Access violation RM 12 free version

I am using the Essentials free version of RootsMagic 12

Windows 10

I added a person and a spouse to a new test database. All I did was try to add a child and got the access violation message.

Was the child a female? Others have mentioned that if the add a male, it’s okay but female they get violation

The bug (though does not seem widespread) has been reported but if you have any additional details to provide – it might help the dev team resolve it quickly. It is present in the Full version so its not surprising to be seen in essentials version. RM typically resolved they fairly quickly one they know root cause.

I tried again with adding an Unknown gender and it worked okay. Then added a Female and got the error.

access errors have been reported by several users – not sure if RM Dev team is aware of all scenarios hopefully resolved in next update or two. I have only had it happen once when I was doing something weird

We’re having an issue consistently making the error come up on our computers. I can have it come up once or twice, then use the same steps and it will no longer happen.

that makes fixing harder – it is interesting though that many users get more often while other dont

So maybe the people need to state Mac or Windows and what version such as Windows 11-- not using cloud based services —32 bit or 64 bit-- dual monitors— only happens on females-- or just on females in new families— all of these ( except last one ) have caused different issues with other things BUT what I don’t understand is why Support would have it happen off and on–so @rzamor1 what are the difference in y6our steps???

I have reports on both Windows and Mac. Female and some not. Happens on Pedigree, Family and Tree View. So its all over the place. Some use the Add menu others right click. Some have it adding a spouse, others adding children. Using Add Spouse or Add Child or the other add options. Some you need to add 4-5 children before it happens. I’ve been able to recreate it and then go back to do it again and nope same exact steps and it won’t happen. Those that report it seem to be able to do it over and over again, we get the file and nope. I’m glad its not wide spread, but it is being extremely difficult to track this down. Any additional steps users can think of would be helpful.

some times its the subtle details – might be anything with these things.

  • never when working less then 10 mins.
  • only after 30 mins
  • Computer specs
  • only when adding people etc

added a female to an existing family-- that was okay but when I tried to add a spouse ( male) for her–got an access violation

So backup and closed out, open file again and tried to add a father
to an existing person ( same existing family) and another access violation when I got all info in there and hit ok–
Backed up and Closed out database again-- reopened and tried to add the same father to the same existing person BUT used Family view-- this time, it came up with IS THIS PERSON ALREADY IN YOUR FILE? and SURE ENOUGH, it was the person that I had added and got the access violation on..

So then I tried to add a spouse ( Family view) to my new father and another violation

@rzamor1 I just downloaded the free Essential version of RM 12 abt 10 minutes ago so it maybe more widespread than you think…

To go thru some of Kevin’s thoughts —I did NOT use Life Summary-- did NOT Right Click or use ADD at top of page-- I simply clicked on the BOX in Family and pedigree View-- happened right away-- most time 1st person I tried to add on a newly converted database from RM 11

Roots Magic Essentials RM 12.0.0.0-- 64 Bit— Windows 11-- no dual monitors-- no backup to cloud

good call out – it could be something like that – or run two monitors but RM on 2nd monitor (not real example for me)

I also wanted to note something else that I’ve found-- the violation always occurs after I have finished entering all the info for the person and hit okay-- so I close out and restart ----thinking that the info on the new person was lost / not made–

WRONG!!!-- even with the violation, the new person was created --JUST NOT ATTACHED TO A FAMILY-- so if this is happening to you, make sure you check to see if the person was created

It occurs all the time for me. So much so that if I closed out every time it happens, I’d end up throwing my laptop!. It occurs both male and female. I can’t replicate it to happen but once it does, oh my. Closing out, considering the frequency, makes it impractical. the only thing that may be a clue: if it mistype and have to correct it seems to occur more frequently - but not always. It is my fault for buying any software that is a .0 version.

this is highly irregular to have this type of bug.
However it happens regularly not quite to help RM figure out problem. I Have had it happen only ONCE and I used the program hours per day past week – this is not helpful to you BUT it does indicate there something more problematic about your environment or the way you move through steps – if you can demonstrate the problem with the same steps then that might point them (RM) in correct direction. RM acknowledge they have been able to repeat the result but not HOW & WHEN – that has been the issue to fix

So use the older version until .1 version come out  No sense in getting frustrated over a computer app.
P.S. it works fine for me

this is what is puzzling – 80%+ users are not getting any (more than one or two) Access errors while others have it happen regularly – that suggests to me more environmental factors

@kevync1985 I totally disagree that it is an environment problem-- I copied my database from RM 11 — had absolutely NO PROBLEMS AT ALL ESPECIALLY ACCESS VIOLATIONS on RM 11-- moved it to a 64 bit version of Essentials and I CAN’T DO A ^%$#&* THING!!! Errors out on every 1 to once in a great while I get 2 people before having to close-- Sorry that pretty much makes me think it’s NOT an environmental problem __ BTW-- I am NOT yelling at you..
So @kevync1985 what version of RM 12 are you running 64 or 32 bit-- I’m on Essentials and it is 64 bit
@MadDog and @thejerrybryan – you don’t seem to get any violations are you running 32 or 64 bit?
@mapleleaf and @dfro are you running 32 or 64 bit?

Click on 3 dots in upper corner and click on about and the pop up window will tell you if it’s 32 or 64 bit

How do I see what bit I installed of the free version?

100% true. I have been able to rescue some new additions by adding a person already in my tree as nkess mentioned above. Doesn’t fix the problem but salvages lost time.
