Constantly getting error in rm12

Access violation at address 00007ff69d1bc18b in module “Rootsmagic.exe” (offset 1c18b). Read of address 0000025f0000033c

What does that mean and how do I stop this annoying error? I’m having to second guess every name I enter.

This is exactly what I’ve just posted about…

Edit and the error may be sexist!!! Its happened three time…all of these new children were females. Two other new children that did not error were males.

any time you get an access error you should close the the program. You are highly likely to get more access errors once you get one. To be safe run all tools after reopening.
As to why someone people get this error that might need further review

FWIW from Gemini AI

This error is a memory access violation (Windows exception code 0xC0000005), occurring when RootsMagic attempts to read from or write to an invalid memory address

In Delphi/Windows applications like RootsMagic, this usually happens due to corrupted memory state, corrupted database indexes, display/GPU rendering conflicts, or a conflicting background process/DLL.

Here is a step-by-step troubleshooting path to resolve this issue:

1. Quick Workarounds & Immediate Steps

  1. Dismiss the Dialog: Click OK on the error dialog. If the program unfreezes, immediately save any unsaved work and restart RootsMagic.

  2. Reboot Your Computer: A system reboot clears orphaned processes and stale memory locks that might be hanging onto RootsMagic files.

2. Run Database Integrity & Index Tools

If this error occurs while opening a specific database, navigating individuals, or editing a record, the underlying database index or cache may be corrupted.

  1. Open your database in RootsMagic.

  2. Go to Tools in the left navigation sidebar.

  3. Under Database Tools, run these options sequentially:

    • Reindex: Rebuilds all database indices.

    • Check Database Integrity: Scans for structural corruptions.

    • Clean Up Data / Rebuild Indexes: Ensures internal pointers are aligned correctly.

3. Clear Cache & Temporary Files

Corrupted temp files or UI state files can cause memory access violations on launch or view switching:

  1. Close RootsMagic completely.

  2. Press Win + R on your keyboard, type %temp%, and press Enter.

  3. Delete temporary files related to RootsMagic (or clear out old temporary files).

  4. Restart RootsMagic.

4. Update RootsMagic 12

Ensure you are running the latest maintenance update for RootsMagic 12, as memory management bugs and exception handling patches are frequently released in build updates.

  • Go to Help > Check for Updates within the software, or download the latest installer directly from the official RootsMagic download page to overlay the existing installation.

5. Additional Diagnostic Steps (If the issue persists)

  • Display / Hardware Acceleration Issues: If the error triggers when opening charts, maps, or rich text note editors, try running RootsMagic in compatibility mode or ensuring your display graphics drivers are updated.

  • Security Software Exclusions: Antivirus or automated cloud backup tools (like OneDrive or Dropbox) attempting to lock database files in real-time can cause memory read collisions. Ensure your .rmtree file is not stored in a folder with aggressive sync locking, or add an exclusion for RootsMagic.exe.

I am using PC, don’t matter still getting them. very flipping annoying. I have done everything everyone has suggested and still getting them.

did everything you suggested to do and still getting them. I just upgraded to 12 so I am up to date. Ready to just chuck it all

Put in a support ticket, Link to Technical Support and use the Chat in the lower right corner.

@nitefaery DON’T JUST CHUCK IT— give them a little time to work thru possible errors that could be causing this-- any chance you had RM 11 and could use that until they do an update?

understood is frustrating and annoying – we as the community can not fix the problem we only might ONLY be able to help facilitate in helping the cause of issue. If 95% of users are NOT getting any errors that make thing much hard to figure out the root cause.

have you been in contact with support?

@kevync1985 you have to remember it is Sunday and support is there Monday thru Friday – I don’t know if it 8-5 or 9-5 Mountain time-- they say it is best to call before 3…

oh I understand support is hard to get a hold of and needed to be contacted during hours
Over 5+ years I have only contacted them twice – once to report and demonstrate a bug they never acknowledged (not sure if it still exists). and one about another issue that was later fixed and does not exist to my knowledge. I was merely note what the other user should do but if they have contacted support they just need to be patient

I believe due to the new release they have people answering the Chat off hours. I put in a ticket on Saturday and got someone immediately.
