I’m getting a new laptop going from little Chromebook to HP Super powered monster with Win 11 Pro. I have RM7, RM9 and RM10. I want all thre on the new machine. I have the key and install file for RM7; and I have TWO install files and key for RM9 and one install and key for 10.
Question for RM7: does it have a problem with Win 11 Pro?
Question for RM9: do I have to install both install files or just 9.1.6 setup file?
Question for RM7 & RM9: right now the working RM files are in a folder on the “C” drive called “Documents”. There are three folders under that, “Roots Magic 7”, “Roots Magic 9” and “Roots Magic 10,” and under each of those are the typical data, backup, media, etc folders for each. I’m not playing with RM10 right now so its folders are empty. But the RM7 and RM9 folders have data and media in them. I presume I can just copy from the old laptop to the new laptop or do I need to do something special?
Question: Do I need to maintain all the files and folders in the same-named folder on the new laptop as the old laptop, i.e., “Documents,” or can I put them in a different named folder?
Question: I don’t remember when I installed these programs if the install sequence picked the folder that the data files would be in. If it does, can I change it without gumming up the whole thing?
Thanks for your help. It’s gonna be fun (probably not).
I have v7, v9 & v10 all on Win 11 with no problems
You can copy all folders under “Documents” to new laptop OR you can create different ones. You will need to Setup the Folder locations in each version to point to correct folder.
I made a Documents/Genealogy folder with subfolders for each version as I upgraded.
Thanks for the reply. I have a main folder on my laptop called “All My Stuff” (I know, catchy, right?) Anyway - the folder “Documents” was something that was created when I started with RM. It is outside of the “All My Stuff” folder which makes my overall backups more involved i.e., I have to back up two different locations. But you’re saying I could move the files to the “All My Stuff” folder as long as I make the changes to the folder locations in each version? That would save some back-up time!
Like MadDog I have RM7, FM9, and RM10 on my Windows11 laptop. I keep my program files in folders off the C drive, ie. Rootsmagic 7, Rootsmagic 9, Rootsmagic 10. My data files are in C:\RM7data, C:\RM9data, and C:\RM10data. I personally keep the same file structure on all my computers to keep from becoming confused. So far I have used the 32 bit versions of the programs and I download the programs new from the Rootsmagic website when I set up a new computer.
For backups to flash drives, I use the same file settings.
Use what file structure makes for you, but try to keep consistent between computers if you are using both. I like to keep the pathnames shorter, and choose not to keep genealogy files in subfolders of mydocuments.
Be careful to turn off one drive on the new computer before starting the process of installing the program versions from scratch… My recent new laptop had a mind of its own and made a mess of my last setup process. The new computer tried taking what was on the old one automatically rather than letting me set up my new programs the way I wanted them.
That will be one of the FIRST things I do! I am not a fan of OneDrive, OneNote or Cloud, etc. I have a lot of programs to move to the new laptop; as for the RM stuff, I just copied the whole folder to my Free Agent Go drive and will then copy to new laptop. Same for my Money file, and other stuff. Everything stays on the Free Agent Go drive as a backup. I really hated to spend the money on the new laptop, but the old one keeps blue-screening at least once a day, sometimes two or three. It only has 4gb ram and a dual core processor - not great for having so many programs open at once and doing research on the internet too.
It’s 5:43 a.m.; been a long night. I got it all set up and all is well. I had a Microsoft Account, and an Office Account from Windows 10. I spent two hours trying to figure out where the hell the “PIN” was that Microsoft wanted me to enter to reinstall my Office 2019. Oh, you mean the PIN I created for the laptop when I first opened it up and started hating Windows 11!? Yeah, THAT Pin! The fun thing is being able to just copy old DOS program file folders from the old laptop to the new laptop, and being able to run the program. OneDrive was promptly disabled. Glad its mostly done.
