Is it possible to reduce duplication by transferring and deleting a family line from one family file to another RM10?
You can use drag n drop to transfer between databases. After the drag n drop the people are still in the original file. If you create a group of everyone you want to delete you can use the “Delete everyone in a group” tool to remove them. This RM10 Help page covers it.
It maybe BUT you have to be very careful in what you pick to transfer.
When you do a drag and drop you have many options–
and a lot more options under select
with a lot more options under some such as Ancestors has # of generations, then Direct Ancestors only, Ancestor and Descendants or Ancestors and all collateral lines.
So I suggest 2 things–
- make a TEST database and clearly mark it as TEST- either make a duplicate of the file you want to keep or drag and drop everybody into the test database then drag and drop the family line from the 2nd file.
- Do NOT delete the family you are moving at least for a while–just in case..
3 BACK UP BEFORE AND AFTER DOING ANYTHING
By using a test file, you can see how things will end up and you can see what if anything is lost on a drag n drop in RM 10–check this out

There are many good and valid reasons for separating out families to different databases as you describe. But most experienced users recommend not do so unless there really are strong reasons. I’m not quite sure how separating families will reduce duplication.
There are several tools within RM to help manage multiple family lines. These tools include color coding and groups.
