A new feature is advertised as “Side panel header lets you quickly switch between spouses and sets of parents”
It’s not quickly switching for me. Here’s steps I took:
Anton is shown in the side panel.
I clicked “Spouses” and Merie’s name appears - I click her name. Nothing happens.
Clicked “Parents” and parent names appear - clicked it. Anton’s thumbnail picture and box at the top suddenly gets smaller. Is it supposed to switch to Anton’s parents? It didn’t.
Clicked Spouses then Merie’s name and Anton’s box and thumbnail picture suddenly gets larger.
Are you on the 32 or 64-bit version. Have you tried closing RM and reopening and see if it still happens? It will stay on the same person, just switch which spouse or parents are showing in the main view.
Let’s make sure you are clicking on the same place I am. Here is a video of length 2:02 that shows how it works for me to change parents. I could make a video for changing spouses, but it works the same for changing spouses as it does for changing parents.
I don’t know what version other than 11.0.1.0 using the download link that was provided when I purchased RM11. Where would I find whether it is 32 or 64 bit?
I closed and restarted RM.
I tried it in Pedigree view and Family View. Tried again and now it seems to work okay in Pedigree view. Meaning, when Anton is highlighted, clicking Merie’s name in the Spouses area causes her to appear in the tree. When clicking parents, the focus changes to show Anton’s parents; and Merie is no longer shown in the tree.
In Family View, the face of Anton gets small and larger as I click between his parents and spouse. Is clicking on the parents or spouse supposed to make that person highlighted in the main area (not the side panel)?
Jerry, yes, I am clicking as you did in your video. The difference is that Anton has just one set of parents, and in your video, your person has two sets of parents. So if Anton has just one set of parents, then clicking Parents isn’t going to do anything.
I tried with a person with 2 husbands and it does work - it displays the husband that was clicked.
So mark this as resolved, because I thought clicking spouses or parents would make them highlighted but all it does is display them if they are not already displayed.
The function you are looking for does exist in a different place. The function you are using is just to switch spouses because Family View and Pedigree View only show one spouse. When you switch spouses in this way, it does not change the focus to the newly displayed spouse. It does display the newly selected spouse, but the focus remains on the original person.
To give the focus to the the spouse (or to one of the spouses if there are more than one), switch the bottom half of the side bar to the Life Summary option. It will have three chevrons. Close the first chevron and use the second chevron. You can then see the spouses and go to one of them while giving the spouse the focus.
When switching between spouses or parents we retain focus on the initial person and then display them with the other spouse or set of parents. Otherwise, we have an issue when the spouse has multiple spouses and who they display with when switched. Because the focus is retained on the person it made it necessary to show the couple in the 2nd generation on the pedigree view instead of moving the focus person to the primary position and losing their spouse.
If you want the spouse to be the focus then use “Go to person” on the drop list next to their name.
