So don’t upgrade. No one is twisting your arm to do so.
True. I’m just disappointed because RM used to be such a great product.
Well, none of their upgrades have been perfect but all of them have been better than the previous iteration (except for RM 8.0). Overall their track record had been good. For sure I don’t agree with everything, but with the exception I noted working on the latest version has always been best.
For only $20 I would encourage most users to try the new version. Change is never easy. I have always appreciated the attempts of Bruce & has developers to add new features requested by the users and will continue to evaluate new offerings. I have bought all versions of Family Origins and RootsMagic over the years and the only ones I did not use were RM4 and RM8 with the primary reason being those versions lacked some of the charts and reports of previous versions. I still prefer RM7 for the ease of data entry and the clean, more easily readable screens. I used RM9 for access to Family Search Family Tree and will use RM10 for the same reason. In the future I will be looking for success with gedcom exports to sites such as Geneanet for general sharing in online databases.
I upgraded yesterday for the health & DNA features really impressed so far.
If you buy the UK version from S&N Genealogy the key is shown in ‘your account’ - ‘Software downloads’ (https://genealogysupplies.com/). Painless upgrade for me (Win 64 bit) - found all my files straight away. Bit strange to recommend removing the previous RM version (I didn’t) but then when opening an existing file firing a pop up recommending that you back up the file in the previous version before converting it.
Go with the flow. RM10 will be the only supported version and must include many fixes for bugs still in RM9 as well as touted new features. $20 upgrade price is reasonable and gives Bruce funds for future support. Consider Family tree maker which never provides interim bug fixes always waiting until an expensive new version can be sold every few years.
RootsMagic is always working on minor fixes and releases them even before major upgrades. Heredis releases an new version every year! They don’t do any interim updates so if you want the latest you can buy at discount. I purchases 2021 to test out and they are up to 2024 now. I never upgraded. Still favor RM over others.
I don’t know where your information comes from, but it is definitely not accurate. The last update to FTM 2019 was “FTM2019Updater05” in September 2023. Considering that MacKiev is based in the Ukraine, with all their troubles, they ought to be congratulated for providing whatever support they can to their customers.
What interests me is whether RootsMagic RootsMagic is silently moving towards an annual subscription model since we have had:
RootsMagic 8 released: October 2021
RootsMagic 9 released: February 2023
Rootsmagic 10 released: June 2024
RootsMagic does appear to be priced very competitively against most of it’s main competitors as a one-off purchase; but pricing is much less competitive if a renewal (upgrade) has to be paid for every 12-18 months.
Actually they do interim updates from time to time but just for required bug fixes AFAIK. I have 2 more recent versions than you and they have both had interim updates.
I am perfectly comfortable with an annual model like Heredis does. And I consider it a bargain at that. Still costs less than a trip with your significant other to the ‘fancy’ coffee shop for a latte-frappe-cappacino with skim milk froth and a scone.
And nothing says we must purchase each upgrade release. Skipping one or two is always an option.
They may have changed their policy. I only get their emails to upgrade every year.
Yes. I can’t say if they email notifications out or not. I think you get notified when you open the software release where the update will apply.
Well, I had no difficulty downloading the upgrade version, installing it, registering, and all that. I’m presently just wandering around inside, poking into corners and looking for changes. Not finding many visible ones, though maybe they’re just in the areas I don’t use much. (I never print out reports or any of that, for instance.)

Has anyone figured out what is “simplified” about the user interface? Looks exactly the same to me.

One complaint, but others may consider it a feature. I.e., converting my RM9 database seems to have automatically added an Alternate Name tags for EVERY SINGLE MARRIED WOMAN. I don’t want those thing in there, it just clutters up the screen and also adds useless items (useless to me) to the name list on the left. This is esp annoying when I’m scrolling down through the names in a group – and I have a lotta groups. When I started using RM some years ago, I made a point of deleting all the Alternate Names as I came across them. I don’t recall this happening with conversion from RM8 to RM9. Why would they DO that? At the very least, it cold have been a conversion option. The thought of having to re-delete several thousand women’s married names just makes me tired.
I’m not seeing any indication of this issue in the RM9 dbs that I’ve converted to RM10. Are you sure that the conversion process is what’s adding the Alternate Name fact?
RM doesn’t added alternate names to women. You must have converted the wrong file.
Well, when I noticed it, I reopened RM9 and checked several of the name listings in my groups. None of them had Alternate Name listings (with the plus sign), because I deleted all those long ago. But they’re there in the same groups’ name listings in RM10. Where else could trhey have come from? And there are no options when you hit the conversion button, it’s either “do it” or “don’t do it.”
I would make a small database in 9 with the ones that where Alt Name was added to in 10. Then convert that database to 10 and see what happens. Also is it happening in specific Groups? You could take a few of them out of those Groups and convert to 10 again. Just bizarre. Let us know.
On the People List view click on Customize and add “Date Edited”. Then you can compare the difference between the dates to confirm if you have the right file converted or not. It’s just physically impossible for RM to add alternate name facts on its own.
In the last two years I went from version 7 to 8 to 9 and now here’s 10. Why not fix the problems before adding new features and versions.
On the last few patches to version 9 I lost the use of my second monitor on my Windows 7 system. Now with version 10 I lose using Windows 7 altogether.
I still cannot find the media files that have lost their link only that I have so many that cannot be fixed. With over 20,000 media docs it is not practical to scroll through the screens looking for the red X. A report or log file with the list would be nice before adding the new features of version 10 that their intro video says many people will not be using.
