I’ve never done any heavy-duty searching within RM. I’ve looked in Google and I’ve not yet found anything which allows me to find all entries in my database which contain the word “sweden”. I understand that place names are in a separate file, or are indexed in some way, so maybe this is harder than it would first appear. Can someone tell me how I can get a list of everyone in my database whose entry contains the word “sweden”? Thank you very much!
(By the way, I have the RM9 “Getting the Most Out of RM9” book, in case that helps. I’m on RM10, but my understanding is that RM9 and RM10 are very closely related.)
The Find Everywhere feature in Search does look in most text fields.
If Sweden was entered in a place field you can search by criteria using the filter: Any fact - place - contains Sweden. Use that filter to make a group and then filter the report to that group.
You can also go to PLACES in the left column-- scroll down to Sweden
and you will see where it was used like I have for England
When you click on the arrow in USED-- you get a list that you can edit
As for an actual list–go to Publish-under all reports is Place List- click on the arrow that says Print and select print events in a single place–run report and save
Could you please share a little more about what your ultimate goal is? Why are you searching for the word “Sweden”?
While Tom did suggest the search feature, something tells me you might have already tried that, and he did say “most” rather than all.
If you’re searching for the word so you can identify persons associated with that word, and Search doesn’t help, all might not be lost.
If you export your tree to a GEDCOM file, you can open that file in a text editor and use that app’s search function. Nearby will be the names of people associated with the instance(s) you find.
Beyond that, knowing why you want to find the word might spark some clever ideas from the community too.
Thank you, to all four of you, for responding. I’m sorry I didn’t reply until now. nkess, your suggestions got me beyond where I was stuck. I had used PLACES, but I didn’t know about clicking on the arrow in USED. I had also looked at PUBLISH, Place List, but here again I didn’t know how to go further. TomH, I had gone to FIND EVERYWHERE, and I saw how entering Sweden would bring me the two place names that use Sweden, but I didn’t know how to find the people who were using these place names. I have played with it and I see that it’ll find data in other fields as well, but in the case of Sweden, the only places it was used was in place names. To KimberlyGreen, thank you also. The reason I was looking for Sweden is because I received a message from someone in MyHeritage. She reported to me that I’m a close DNA match and she was wondering whether I could help her find information for someone in her family who had roots in Sweden, but who had changed his name when he emigrated.
Again, thank you to all of you. Now if I can just remember these tricks next time I want to do something like this!
