Apparently there is a new RM 11 version. However when I click the link in the home page it goes to a web page that refuses to let me in using Safari no matter how many times I enter magic letters lower or upper case. Chrome does let me see there is a video and some news.
It would also have been nice to send current users an email about the update price expiring in a few days.
web page does work if I turn off my content blocker.
per a stalled support chat mac users need to completely uninstall all components of an older version of RM before installing the new 11. Support should warn their few mac users of the need for a complete uninstall and that there is a new version with a soon to end upgrade price. I certainly got no alert about either.
I’m sorry but support gave you really bad information. Those are old directions for RM7 wrapper uninstall. RM8 or later is just a typically Mac uninstall. Not really sure why they thought you need to remove a wrapper and I have spoken to them about this.
to clarify: mac users with RM10 installed do need to completely uninstall all components or just the actual app? Thank You.
Just uninstall the app per Renee.
Note: after moved RM 10 app to the trash and installing RM 11 there was a RM 10 folder in my home folder Rootsmagic and in Public Rootsmagic. I moved those to the trash, quit and restarted RM11 which still seemed to work.
Apple Silicon code made a huge speed difference but RM 11 still uses a huge amount of CPU at idle (15% vs <= 1% all others).
The official email has been delayed. We want to resolve all the key issues that happened in the first few hours. Sales is manually having to generate all those keys.
There are problems with the Windows version as well. I just discovered late yesterday there was a new RM version. I had received – to my knowledge - no notice of the new version nor the upgrade pricing. I was able to order, receive the registration code, and install RM11 last evening but I was charged $29.95 instead of the special pricing. I did send an email re the pricing and am expecting a $10 refund.
Well, the percentage on my M3 iMac is of the order of 1-2% of one of the lower performance less power consuming CPU cores, so much much better than RM10. Seems very acceptable to me.
Open each RM 10 file, run the database tools and save the file and a backup to a new folder (ie z Hold RM 10).
Move the RM 10 program plus the two RM 10 folders in your mac home folder to the trash and empty that.
Download RM 11, install it and use Settings to point to your Data/Media/Gedcom/Backup folders. Then open each RM 10 file to convert it to the RM 11 format.
I think we need to be a bit wary of these supposed high CPU usage numbers on Apple silicon. Having looked again at the numbers on my system, yes, if I use Activity Monitor, it says 18%. But equally, it says Finder is using something like 15%. However, if you use something like iStat Menus that shows the usage of each of the individual cores, the usage is dramatically lower for both. There seems to be a view is some quarters that the CPU usage numbers displayed by Activity Monitor on Apple silicon are nonsense, so we need to be careful about jumping to conclusions.
