RM 10 will not open (Solved - Had to Reinstall!)

I thought maybe this needed a separate thread. After unsuccessful attempts to TreeShare to ancestry, I decided to try manually adding all the missing people, per a suggestion on my other thread.

On about the 3rd person, the software hung and I had to force quit. Now the program won’t open. I rebooted my Mac, no luck. I even tried moving my rmtree file out of the folder temporarily. Program still won’t load.

Not sure what cause a windows issue this week – I was getting a Runtime 217 error – I suspect an update to another software caused this. Reinstalling 64bit RM on W11 resolved this.

RM seems awfully buggy. I’m starting to worry.

I have been using RM for 4 years – I have never lost data etc.
the Runtime error had nothing to do with RM (as far as I could tell) and was just a pure windows error cause by the other software install. ( it was an update to 13 year old software).
I was more to inform anyone with a Runtime error of 217 that that repeats a install should clear that error.

The missing data in Ancestry is annoying due to “class” but it does not impact the integrity of the RM Database or at least their has not been evidence thereof.

That’s good to know… but it’s still awfully buggy. Not to sound mean… but that’s always the experience I had with Windows software. RM doesn’t appear to truly be written for the Mac.

I’m still sticking with it. It has a lot of awesome features.

I am not a software engineer but the (complete) re-write under Ver8 was largely for the MAC not windows.

Prior to v8, there was a MAC install & a PC install. RM decided to make 1 install for both so they started everything from scratch.

Well nothing about the Mac Version is mac-like, but at least it’s not running on crossover.

Once you get used to a sidebar with what should be in a top menubar and accept the many clicks needed to do anything RM is ~OK. My problem is the clumsy display of source and citation information. On FTM when I click a source / citation I see all my entered information in one screen not several broken up ones.

I don’t dislike FTM at all. I think it’s a great program. My problem is with the ethics of the company,

What–you don’t like buying an upgrade and then being forced to click your way through 20 pages of trinkets to get to what you already paid for!! I agree. FTM also does not put out bug fixes, lacks a good user forum like this and is a less powerful program. It does work like a mac app should though.

No, that’s fine. However, pre-selling a product then not delivering as promised is something else. Take the FTM 2019 Book. Presold at release, and not delivered until a few months prior to the release of FMTM 2024, YEARS later. Then, FTM was also delivered months later than promised.

I have zero faith in that company now.

To be fair to the developers of FTM, most live in Ukraine and have been under siege for 3-1/2 years. Perhaps some left to fight. FTM has addressed bugs and delivered new product during that time, as stressful as it has been and continues, increasingly, to be.

True, FTM does not operate a user forum but FTM users do run a well operated group on Facebook with a suite of user-developed guides available from which to learn and answer common questions.

Returning to RootsMagic, glad to hear that reinstalling got you running again. One should not have to resort to such measures whether on Mac or Windows.

Many careful people avoid sleazy companies like facebook.

FTM 2024 took 14 months after getting paid to deliver—really a bait and switch con.
