If I give someone my RootsMagic file on a shareable drive, can they buy a licensed copy of RootsMagic and restore the file?
Yes, the license is for the software rather then the actual database.
They can download the Essentials (free) and then purchase license while they wait.
It will create a folder in My Documents and they should copy the file to that location. They can change to a different location if they want.
just clarifying if you mean the RM database file or the backup file. If they backup contains media they should have everything – if it is only the RM database – it will not have the media (other than the thumbs images) – depending how you do it. I would avoid going the GEDCOM route though
