I’ve been gradually cleaning up my citations and really like that in RM8 I can see all the citations for a source and work through them to clean them up.
The problem is that after deleting an unused citation the next citation in the list is highlighted (that part’s OK), BUT the edit citation dialogue shows details for a totally different citation!
Even though it’s highlighted, I think you still have to click on it to populate the edit screen correctly.
What you stated is correct. Even though the top line is highlighted it’s not really highlighted. You must click on it or another line, then that item will show on the right side.
It needs to be fixed.

I totally agree. Same problem occurs in other parts of the program and could eventually be responsible for data entry errors.
