I have a cemetery with a large number of ancestors which is wrongly associated with a city. (Church is in one township but cemetery is in another, ugh!) Is there an easy way to move the entire place detail (with all users) to the correct township. . . ? Fingers crossed. . . TIA.
Rename the existing Place Detail to something distinctive (“X” for this explanation). Create the wanted Place Detail “Y” under the correct Place. Merge X into Y.
If the place details are in different cities (the current one and the new one), how do you merge one place detail (X) with another place detail (Y) in a different city using RootsMagic 10? I thought you could only merge place details within one place entry.
I agree. After reviewing your observation, I don’t see a way to do this on mass within the RM program.
You don’t merge it BUT you MIGHT be able to change it–will still take some work–
1st scenario–I have 50 people buried in Joe’s Cemetery, Chicago, IL but they should have been listed in Dekalb, IL ( county line changes)–if that is the only fact I have under Chicago–I can simple change the PLACE name…
Unfortunately that is NOT the only fact I have listed under Chicago–so then I would create a group using the criteria
Burial place details contain Joe’s Cemetery
once my group is formed ( and make sure I got everybody) then I would make a new temporary fact Burial 2
Then go to tools and select Add a fact to everyone in a group— add the info and run selected tool
This is where the work comes in— in this case, I will have to go in and add the burial date–if you have sources, media, notes or tasks, your going to have to add them to Burial 2–once you have completed everything on a person- DELETE THE BURIAL—leaving just Burial 2–once you have done everybody in the group-- then go back to tools
and Use Change fact type for all people from BURIAL 2 to BURIAL
Sounds like a lot of work — comes down to is it easier to do this or just go in and manually change the city or fix the fact in one person and copy it to all the rest?
It will need to be a manual edit. On the Places page open the Used list on the cemetery location. Highlight each person in the list and click on the Edit button at the top. Manually change the place and place details to the new location.
