Media Search Bug

When searching for people via Given or Surname in main Media tab, results filter as expected… Except…

When I search for either my own Given name or Surname in either “Sorted by Caption” or “Sorted by Filename” - results give everything !

From what I can see, and through tests, the search is also looking at the main filename location name (or Database name) and not just cation or filename, and so gives all media files as results if you search for any separate word within the name..

E:\Roots Magic\Dennis G Strong Family Tree_media\

Searching for any of the words in the above gives full results :-

Roots

Magic

Dennis

G

Strong

Family

Tree

Media

Could this be looked at please.

Thanks

Den

Similarly to the main People menu page INDEX, RM is “filtering” through the combined filepaths and media filenames together. It ONLY returns those (added already) which contain the specific string of characters that you’re using as your search term. So, for example:

Just typing nnis G will return all filenames in E:\Roots Magic\Dennis G Strong Family Tree_media\ AND any where that string is part of the filename, but NOT in the example path.

-or- certificate will return all filepaths/filenames that “contain” that grouping of letters. ETC.

Hi, Thanks for reply.

Searching in media with nnis G returns all files just as my first comment.

Issue found when trying to filter out all Strong members filenames & captions for cleaning up. Leaves all files up ( 7000 ) no matter the caption or filename.

Searching main Index and works correct - finds anything with STRONG listed.

Yep, because the file path where you apparently store all your media is E:\Roots Magic\Dennis G Strong…\… so it gets returned as a result. The filtering function is working with the full filepath and filename as one long string of characters that were stored in the below field of your database along with a thumbnail (NOT searching your file system):

It’s a feature, not a bug. Seriously.

Perhaps it’s not a very well thought out feature. If better thought out, perhaps you could search separately for the file name, the file path, and the caption. But as designed, it searches on all those places by default and there is no way to change or influence the default

Hi.

Thanks to both for clarifying.

I could understand it working like that for Filename search - would make sense. Would e better is it searched inside the folder though

But searching via Caption should surely just return items with the search work in the cation title ?? After all, caption is just RM internal field and not listed as part of the Filename !

yes agree it works well (as designed) as a global search but it if want to narrow where the hits are not so much…
