So I know that when you do a gedcom , you can Privatize people and facts–when you treeshare, you can Allow people to view this tree( people marked living are hidden).
What I want to know is if I upload a gedcom or treeshare to Ancestry
If I privatize people or facts in a gedcom, will I still be able to see the people and facts
If I use treeshare and mark Allow, do I have to go in and mark all living or is any person without a death date considered living or do they go by anyone born aft 1930 as some programs do–either way will I be able to see the ones marked living..
There isn’t a way to privatize people other than marking them living, even if they are not. Check the living flag in RM before uploading.
If left unchecked to upload, facts marked private will not upload with a new Ancestry tree. You can however upload it on an existing tree if you want to share it. I am not sure if Ancestry has a private fact option on their website so you would need to check out what happens on the website.
There are many possible reasons you might have for using TreeShare. One reason might be to get WebHints from Ancestry. Another reason might be to publish your data for the public. Another reason might be to use RM and Ancestry together to collaborate with other users who are researching the same family. Etc., and this certainly is not an exhaustive list of all the possible reasons for using TreeShare.
It has always seemed to me that not all of these possible purposes are mutually compatible. At the present time, I use my tree at Ancestry primarily for Web Hints. Therefore, I keep my Ancestry tree completely private. That assures the privacy of living people. But just as important to me, it also assures the privacy of people in my database who are not yet fully researched or who are in my database for reasons other than my relationship to them.
For example, there were two Bryan families in early Sevier County, Tennessee - one of which was my ancestral family and the other of which was unrelated. But I often have to record both families in my RM database to keep track of which is which - for example when recording all burials in a cemetery or all marriages in a courthouse marriage book. So I wouldn’t want to be publishing all these other kinds of people publicly, whether they were living or not. I only want to publish publicly those people who are well researched and who are in my ancestral families. In other words, my working RM database is always a work in progress - always a draft document, always includes speculations in addition to finished researched, and always includes a certain small number of non-family members.
For me as a sample size of one, that means that if I wanted to use Ancestry as a way of publishing my data publicly, I would make a second RM database that is extracted from my main RM database and it would be that extract that I would publish publicly at Ancestry.
