Is there a way I can import the Stories I created in Legacy Family Tree into RM10? I want to finalize my migrations from Legacy to RM10.
Confirming that Legacy’s stories are not direct importing into RM. It has been reported to development. A GEDCOM import with that option checked in Legacy will include them.
Renee,
Thank you. Importing using a GEDCOM worked.
Now, is there a way to include these stories in either a Book or a Narrative? I looked at the Publish tool for both of these and didn’t see where I could include stories.
I’m not a Legacy Family Tree user. Exactly where in RM do the Legacy Family Tree Stories show up? it would surely be somewhere in RM’s Edit Person screen for each person. But if that’s not where the Stories appear in RM, then where do they appear in RM?
They show up as a Fact with the title “Story”.
In that case, they should show up in a book or narrative produced by RM more or less automatically. You would need to look at the Story fact in the Fact Type list in RM to be sure the Story fact is enabled for narrative reports and that it has a sentence defined. By not being a Legacy Family Tree, I’m not able to test this to confirm it. But that should be all that is required.
In the case of a Book created by RM, it is simply a collection of chapters where each chapter is an RM report. So there is not an option to enable the Story fact for Books. Instead, you enable the Story fact for reports and then make the reports into chapters in a Book.
Thanks, I’ll give it a try.
I poked around the Story Facts. I’m still trying to determine if there is a way to just create a report that will print out just all my stories with maybe the ancestor’s name and story, that’s it. I don’t need an entire narrative, just a clean report of stories only. I’m thinking this doesn’t exist. It also appears the only way I can generate a list of people that have stories is by going through my list of people from Legacy and tag them in RM. Right?
You can use a Fact List under Publish. Your option would be to click on List Type and select “People with a Fact” then select Story. This will select everyone in RM with a Story fact and can be printed or saved.
Thanks, so I got as far as selecting all my ancestors that have stories as you showed here. After clicking OK and clicked on generate report, but all I got was a single blank page.
I was just offering a quick path to selection criteria. . You need to investigate designing the Custom Report that is part of the process. It is procedural and slightly difficult to explain versus just watching a RM video or experimenting with a basic desired columnar output format.
Got it, thank you for the clarification.
This is perhaps oversimplified, but I made a Custom Report with my Narrative fact. Here is what one page of it looks like.
The setup in the Custom Report dialog is something like the following. There are three rows for each person. Row 1 is text with the ------------------ dividers. Row 2 is the person’s name. Row 3 is the note of my Narrative fact. Note that even though it’s “one row” in the definition of the Custom Report, it contains the entire note so it’s multiple rows in the actual report.
Jerry, you’re the best. I thought I was going to have to copy/paste all 195 stories from the RM Stories Fact into MS Word. Your idea did the trick. And it is not over-simplified as I can do all the enhancements I need inside MS Word. A huge thank you!
So, my new report is working just great. Maybe you can answer this question. At the top of each new page I’m getting a solid blue bar across the page, from left margin to right margin. I can’t find anything in the custom report edits to remove this thing. Any ideas?
I have the same problem, and I don’t know how to fix it. I tried turning off headers, but doing so didn’t actually do anything. Perhaps this is going to have to be one for the RM HelpDesk.
Thanks Jerry,
I’ll play around with it some more, then head to the Help Desk. While I have you here, are your Ancestry Hints populating? I’m logged in to my shared tree and have moved around Ancestry a bit, but I’m not seeing any Ancestry Hints. ONly plenty of FS and FindMyPast.
My Ancestry hints are populating just fine in RM when I use them.
But to tell you the truth, I don’t use them much in RM anymore. I have come to prefer Right Click > Jump To > Jump To Ancestry. I deal with the hints from there most of the time instead of from RM.
In addition to preferring to work with the hints from within Ancestry, it’s also the case that these days I mostly use People List View and Descendant View in RM. These two views do not support WebHints. To use WebHints, I have to be in Family View or Pedigree View. I don’t like RM10’s version of those views as compared to RM7’s version of those views, and I especially don’t like RM10’s version of Family View.
