I am not saying there should be any geolocation. What I am objecting to is receiving notifications which make a coloured numbered blob on my Home icon but which are totally irrelevant and in fact not available to me and all other non-US residents. When I said All Or Nothing that is exactly what I meant - give the US users details of the UK offers (and the Australian and Canadian etc. offers) and see how they like it!
…and my point was to avoid you seeing said Blob, it isn’t all that easy. You will need to be geolocated, or in some other manner, exclude from the list. It ain’t a simple matter of scratching Terry from a mailing list.
While it is my opinion that RM should only be targeting news items involving RM itself, and not third party anythings, it is not so easy as some people seem to think. There will need to be some whole new mechanism built to obtain and figure a user location and another mechanism built to exclude said location. I suspect this will need to be a combination of both software and server side tools.
Rootsmagic already has a blog, a mailing list, Facebook and a website where said third party ads would probably be better suited, but they can’t rely on reaching the maximum people on those mediums, they can, and apparently do, via the software. It isn’t like they have changed their policy in regards to ads, since they did the same thing in Rootsmagic 7, the only difference is now one has to click the little check mark every time there is an add, instead of just once.
If I used RM9, I would be more in favor os going back to the splash screen where one could tick a box and then the only news items would be update notification…but I don’t and won’t use the travesty that is RM8 and later.
Fully concur on that one.
Fully concur on that one.
It is doing these divisive ads via the software that involves me in some sort of action that I object to.
I only get the UK offers by e-mail. Never had any through the RM7, RM8 or RM9 program (or app, or whatever Microsoft wants to call it this week).
Lucky man. Perhaps Renee could explain why I am getting them and you aren’t. Maybe there is a way of turning them off that I am not aware of. Or did you buy the UK version from S & N? I’m betting that that is the reason.
I bought the UK version from S&N as you suggest. Wonder what would happen if you downloaded the UK version and used your key?
I have been buying direct since Family Origins. Maybe I will go the UK Version route next time if I continue to get all these irrelevant US offers.
Would this work Renee?
The UK version does connect to a different server.
Sounds like that is the one I need to connect to to avoid this annoying “News”
