Beginning with a new Fact Type which includes a URL being given in the description, and the corresponding TreeShare Ancestry Fact, the Narrative Report produced and when directly viewed in RM, includes a perfectly working URL, albeit without the typical hyperlink stylining; e.g., underlined, blue colored text, and when clicked, opens up the browser to the linked destination. However, when the Narrative Report is saved as a PDF, the URLs simply don’t work. When the Narrative Report is saved as a Microsoft Word (.docx), LibreOffice Writer appears to be working but then crashes.
It’s unclear what’s causing the failure of the hyperlink to work in the PDF. The issue with LibreOffice Writer v25.2.2.2 is an even bigger wonder. In either case, my first question: Is it allowed to include URLs in the Narrative Report as outlined in the procedure above?
The text version (as you’ve entered it) is how it would appear in most non-HTML aware applications (those which do not act upon web HTML links and other features). Some applications have varying support for recognizing a URL in it’s strictly textual form as a web address and transforming it to a web link. It could be automatic or it could be manually highlighting them and telling it to make them into web links. Some require that the URL already be entered in web HTML form such as: <a href="https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/101758177/margaret-howe">Findagrave for Margaret Sumner</a>
Some, then, will not recognize the web HTML form as linkable (in other words… as anything but text).
I did not define a fact sentence. I merely pasted the HTML link as shown in the post above into the Fact description and then generated a Narrative report. It then shows a preview of the Narrative report and the link (in the preview) is clickable which when clicked …opens the default browser to Margaret’s FindaGrave page.
RootsMagic’s sentence templating does not understand any of the above except for [desc]. The sentence template should probably end with: The URL for the memorial is [desc]
the Description field of the fact would hold the <a href="https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/101758177/margaret-howe">Findagrave
I’m out and about away from my computer, sorry.
Ooh, good idea, and certainly was worth a try, but delivery of the HTML via the Ancestry didn’t work. And that’s fine, no big deal. Anybody who cares enough can copy and paste the URL.
I didn’t like the way the url looked (too much verbage) so I just put in the memorial # in Desc.
Easy to copy just that and paste into findagrave website.
