How to add a couple who housed an ancestor

I have a couple [Samuel & Julia Collins] who housed my 4GGF [John & Mary Lewis]. I initially thought that she was a daughter but she is not. Is there a way to keep them in the genealogy? I know I need to remove the current parent / daughter relationship that I had been working on.

As far as keeping the couple in your database, simply don’t delete them.

However, I think what you are really asking is if there is a way to link the Collins couple to Mary Lewis so the event of “housing your Mary Lewis” shows up in reports.

I have not personally played with it yet, but there is a relatively new feature in RM called Associations that might do what you need.

Another option would be to enter a Residence fact for your Mary Lewis and include a note to the effect that she was being housed by the Collins couple. You could also add a role to the Residence fact and share the role with the Collins couple.

There are probably several other similar options, but I think that most of them would be in the same spirit as these possible options.

actually I was thinking about using this for one of my Great Aunts that lived with a family in 1930 Census. It turned out (and I doubt she even knew) there were distant cousins. So actually that brings another questions can someone be changed from “associate” to non-associate or vice a versa. So far the only thing I have used associates for is Best Man / Maid
of honor type things.

Generally, a Maid of Honor is made of honor, but not always ;-). (I always tried to be.)

I’ve hesitated to use the Associations feature of RM because of my TreeShare connection with Ancestry. I wish Ancestry would get with the program and implement a decent FAN¹ capability. Cluster genealogy is a power technique that Ancestry is lagging behind on.

“Associate” isn’t a type of person. It’s just a fact item that gets added to a person (see below). So there’s no conversion needed. You just delete the Association fact item from a person if needed. The actual person record remains along with any other facts, citations, etc that you have for them. You can then do whatever else you might want to do, such as delete the person record, attach them as a child of someone in the tree, etc.

Note: One of the “Association” types of connections is “Household”. So @206bones you could leave Julia Collins in your tree as a person record and create a Household association Fact between her and John & Mary.

I would use Share to show they all lived in same house.
If it is Census, you will have relationship to Head of house.
If Directory List, you could use Roomer.
