Feature Request: During Backup Add More Than Date To Filename

And what if you are using a VPN for increased security? A VPN can make it look like you are anywhere in the world.

Don’t worry, Jerry, the link they posted also says that the barometer is used. Might as well use something that is always changing.

My computer never sees that address. Only my router sees it. I use 192.168.x.x on my LAN

Well, so do I. BUT my Mac also reports when the external IP address assigned by the ISP changes - and what the new address is. I’m sure PCs also see that address as it must be5 a function of the LAN, not the device.

But isn’t this getting a little off the topic - a simple request to have the option (or always) add the time as well as the date to the backup file name.

Yes,…

Makes sense to me. Wouldn’t have thought that was the case from Rooty’s post.

Yes, but…

If this feature were to be implemented, would the timestamp to be added to the filename be local time or UTC time? And if local time, which “local” time? And would it work the same on a Mac or a PC?

I make note of the fact that RM7’s Date Last Edited field was a date stamp only and it was based on local time. RM9’s Date Last Edited field is a full time stamp in the database, and it is based on UTC time. However, when the Date Last Edited Field is displayed in the RM user interface, it displays only as a date stamp without the time and it is adjusted to display as a local date. So RM can adjust the time if necessary if your computer changes time zones or if it goes your computer lives in a location where the time changes by an hour in the spring and fall. However, it wouldn’t be possible to make the same adjustments to local times that were stored in a file name.

My request was for local - I don’t think in UTC. But I guess I would want it in 24 hour mode so I can tell 7am (07-00) from 7pm (19-00). and so that sort by file NAME gives the same sort order as sort by DATE.

And local means whatever time my computer thinks it is when the backup is made.

I think in general that people are bloody well way overthinking this. The point is to designate backups made the same day from others on that day. Exactly how often is someone going to backup their family file on their computer and in the same day drive to one or more other time zones and backup their file again. First off, one should not be backing up to their computer without backing up elsewhere. If one is using multiple computers, one could easily keep backups from those computers in separate folders.

There is absolutely no reason that a simple time stamp based on the computer’s system time (in 24 hour format) would not work as backups are going to be specific to the computer. One doesn’t need local or UTC or Australian Daylight Savings time or anything else. It would probably be just as easy to append sequential integer numbers to the file. If ‘myfamily.(01-11-2024-1).rmbackup’ exists then the next file would be ‘myfamily.(01-11-2024-2).rmbackup’ would be the next one.
