Feature request - ad hoc relationships, links in text

When entering text that refers to another person, it would be nice to create a link to that person.

How I see it working is:

let’s say you are entering information about a death and you want to enter “Murdered by John Smith” where John Smith is another person in the tree.

You would enter "Murdered by "
then type “@joh
Autocomplete kicks in and you can continue typing or select one from the list

The resultant text will show a link to John Smith with their primary name. If the primary name changes in future it would change in the link text as well.

Benefits of doing this:

  • Saves time for uncommon or unique relationships to events (don’t have to edit fact type etc)
  • Text shows the related person’s name and in the context that makes sense for that unique or uncommon relationship.

If the link is supposed to be a hyperlink, where is it supposed to go?

Is it supposed to function not only in the Edit window but also in all outputs (reports, websites…)?

To the person record within the application.

It could be used in outputs as well.

So when viewing any Fact Note for a person, clicking on this hyperlink (could be more than one?) does what?

  1. Opens this other person’s Edit Person window (max of 3 allowed)? Or
  2. Changes the focus person in the main view (People)?

I was thinking change focus person in the main view, how would you do it?

I don’t know. It wouldn’t be a trivial change and there would likely be mixed reactions. I suspect it would be easier and more acceptable for it to open the Edit Person window if there are less than 3 in use.

Doesn’t seem to me to be a common problem. Seems simple to just type the associated name in the index to bring them up. As for keeping the name insync I would disagree, as the event was that he was slapped by “Will Smith” not “Willard Carrol Smith II”.
