I use other tools (excel, etc) to manage my people in the database. It would be fantastic if there was a hyperlink format that would open RM (and appropriate rmtree file) and bring me right to my person.
Example: rootsmagic://person/123
When clicked, RM opens (or comes to front window if open) and brings me right to person with ID “123”.
I assume this is not possible now, but would love to be proven wrong!
LMK if this should be a support / feature request.
You can create hyperlinks in Excel (or PDF) then link to MyRootMagic Tree (or Gedsite etc or other sites.)
But it sounds link you want to bring up an Edit screen from a Hyperlink. I suspect the reason for hesitation from RM POV would be supporting that might be challenging.
Correct - I do NOT want to go to a website (like MyRootsMagic Tree). The behavior is similar in how Slack and other native application can open from a URL with a special protocol prefix.
At this point, RM does not even open a .rmtree file from the OS file manager. Many would be happy to have that enhancement. Even the opening of the app itself is fairly heavy going let alone also opening a database file and populating the screen with data.
I am the family genalogy for the Wyckoff House & Association, and manage the “Wyckoff Family In America.” Our common ancestor (Pieter Claesen Wyckoff) came to the US in 1650s, and his homestead is the oldest building in New York State.
The Wyckoff Family In America is the official genealogical record of the descendants of Pieter Claesen Wyckoff and Grietje Van Ness. First published in 1934, the Wyckoff Family In America has grown into a comprehensive database with over 65,000 documented family members spanning 18 generations.
I use RM as my authoritative source for the WFiA, and need to bring up records on a regular basis. I use the PersonID as a primary key for most internal systems, and would love to click a link, open RootsMagic, and drill right into the person.
That said, right now, I go to search and search by record ID. Seems odd that I need to “search” to find the records. If there’s a quicker way to pull up a person by their ID, I’d love to know!
