Hello. I did not import deep enough from FamilySearch to grab my family tree past 4 children level. I imported 10 ancestors & 4 descendants. Now, I need to import 6 more descendant levels & possibly 2 more ancestor lines.
I have searched Bruce’s RM10 book, but nothing stated regarding importing FamilySearch file into an existing RM10 file.
If i do the import again over my existing RM 10 file, will i end up with a gazillion duplicates? Does RM10 know enough to skip duplicates from a FamilySearch import?
OR should i just import into a new file?
Thank you …
It’s best to import into a new blank database. That way you can clean it up as you wish and then drag n drop it into the main database. If the FamilySearch import is into an existing database it may freeze if it encounters someone already in the database. It won’t know to link them. If the download stops at any point it won’t resume.
The other option is to select to add each family members off the Share data tab in the FamilySearch Person Tools. That would give you more control on who you are adding and linking in the existing database.
One more observation. As FamilySearch is importing, I am seeing the levels of Grandparents & the Great Grand Aunts/Uncles fly by. I am not seeing any Cousins or children, children’s children, etc., yet.
Do you know if they are imported after these upper relative levels have completed?
Do they show up as they are imported?
I imported 12 levels of both ancestors & descendants… I hope I am understanding that option correctly.
I’m not sure if they’re captured or not (on the basis of not being Ancestors nor Descendants of the highlighted person) but 24 generations of Desendants from each of the earliest paternal and maternal pair(s) obviously would.
Apparently, FamilySearch does not import any family after Grand Aunts & Uncles. The import brought in all my Grandparents through the 12th level, those Grandparents’ children (my Grand Aunts & Uncles)… but that is it. None of my Grand Aunts’ & Uncles’ children (1st cousins & beyond) are imported.
I will try importing using their FamilySearch ID as my starting place… This is so fun!
sigh
It will import the direct line ancestors of the focus person and their children. So each family unit of direct line ancestors. The descendants option is only descendants of the focus person.
