FamilySearch Automatch feature

An enhancement to the FS Automatch to let the matching continue to where one last left off would be helpful, i.e. like not having to start over after a certain period of time would be helpful. A total match of my large database takes at least 18 hours. This morning one of my computers decided to do updates when the matching was 3/4 completed – which obviously shut off the matching process. For many of us such a long wait time for the matching is an inconvenience to say the least.

It should only run AutoMatch on those not matched. So if it needed to start over it will skip over those already matched. The list should be shorter each time it is run. The issue I could see with having it resume where you left off, is that new data and relationships may have been added that help with the next AutoMatch. AutoMatching one family member can help with the next pass in identifying family members not matched earlier.

With several tries, AutoMatch does not appear to be skipping over anything. So far it has matched 248,175, and the other 60,700 people were unmatched. This laptop has a Ryzan7 chip, 32GB RAM and tons of empty hard drive space. My last try today went 4 hours before matching the first person and the green bar had reached about 1/4. My last matching exercise was on a different laptop with 16 GB Ram. That session, a few months back, took approximately 18 hours. My 3/4 matching process during the night took about 12 hours and matched 559 new people before Windows update interupted the process.

To find a match it needs to be an extremely close match. It also take family members into consideration when matching, and won’t find anyone living. If you have almost a quarter million people in the file and 60K are not matches that’s pretty good odds. I can see it taking a long time to run through them. I know you hate to see it start over, but it has to. A more powerful computer won’t make the internet or FamilySearch’s servers run any faster.

For those interested, the new Automatch process took 12.5 hours In a database of 308, 874 individuals. This attempt netted 1032 new matches of now 249,206 most of which were matched in the last 15 minutes of the search. Normally I would not worry about what was matched, but the hints do not seem to show up within RM10 without matches.
