Family Search CET

Is there any timeframe for adding the feature of syncing CET files between Family Search and RM?

Thanks.

I believe that CETs are ONLY accessible through the FamilySearch Labs section (Currently). That said I suppose it would be possible to develop an API partnership between two. However, as for timeline – “we” would not hear that as RM never states anything about upcoming enhancements other than “reported to development”. I suspect Fam Search would likely not be on board with this at current time. Plush those seems to be in fluid state so not sure if you would see anything in the near future.

The reason I asked is that I received an email from FS April 2025 that said:

RootsMagic and FamilySearch teams have been working together to enable our software to connect to each other over the internet and keep the edits in your trees synced. Here is what that will mean:

  • Later this year, you will be able to create a CET from within RootsMagic, without uploading a GEDCOM file, and the CET and your RootsMagic database will be kept in sync.

I am just a user like you – I have been using RM since RM Preview 8 was announced.
If I had to bet money – that is not likely something we would see in RM11 (so my guess not before RM 12)

We’ve never given a time frame when RM would work with FamilySearch CET trees. I’m surprised that FamilySearch did.

Thanks for your reply Renee. Here is the text of the email that FS sent out regarding CET’s and RM.

Subject: The new FamilySearch user owned tree feature (CET) has been enabled for you

Thank you for your interest in becoming an early access user of FamilySearch’s new CETs initiative. Your application has been accepted, and the feature has been enabled for you. You can access it at the following link:

https://www.familysearch.org/en/groups/research-tree

Feature Summary:

This new feature will allow you to upload a GEDCOM file containing your tree data to FamilySearch into a CET that you will own and can control who edits the data. As the owner, you can invite others you trust to help build your tree. All users on FamilySearch will be able to see the deceased in your tree by default, but only you and those you invite can make any edits. Most FamilySearch tools, data and features are accessible in your CET (ex. Record hinting, collaboration, etc.). Soon, we will enable Tree2Tree person hints from the FamilySearch Family Tree, and from other trees, and you will be enabled to build your tree using the sources discovered by others.

When you applied for access to the CET feature, you indicated that you use RootsMagic as your preferred genealogy software. If you decide to create a CET using a GEDCOM file from RootsMagic at this time, the CET you create will not sync initially with RootsMagic on your desktop.

  • When the future integrated version of RootsMagic is released, you will also be able to use RootsMagic to identify the CET you create now with a GEDCOM and connect this CET to your desktop RootsMagic tree.

  • For information regarding RootsMagic support for CETs please contact RootsMagic.

that interesting – thanks for sharing. Still that RM is not likely to comment on timeframe – adding that sounds like a database enhancement would be needed meaning it would not happen in RM11

Fascinating that FS spoke for RM and committed RM to rolling this out in late 2025. Almost like passing the hot potato and yelling tag you’re it lol

I wonder if work on this was derailed by being forced by Ancestry to change to the new API?

derailed is strong description - maybe delayed to running out of fuel would be better lol

What is “CET”? I have never heard of the term. I have searched for the term in the FamilySearch Help function and get no explanation.

“Controlled-Edit” Tree(s) was the code name for research aimed at providing the ability to create and manage private family trees on their platform and offer access/edit permissions. They are now implemented as: User Trees at FamilySearch.org

Thanks so much for explaining this to me. It was indeed a “code” name, and I did not have the Decoder Ring. I have used FamilySearch for years and don’t recall seeing the term. Thanks also for the link to the concept under the new name of User Tree, although when I press the link, all it gives me is:

Manage Trees

Uploaded to Genealogies

You don’t have any trees uploaded to Genealogies yet

I’ll do some further research.

You would need to FIRST create a tree at FamilySearch, before you could Manage Trees…
Look for BUILD A TREE at the FamilySearch Portal Home Page

Thanks. I have never uploaded my tree to FamilySearch (it is always changing) and, now that I understand what a CET file is, would have expected FamilySearch to prompt me with a new page and question, “Would you like to upload a tree now?” But no worries, just an assumption.

Well, after a little searching, I see where to upload a “private” tree . Yesterday, all I had was the “uploaded to genealogies” part - today I seem to be able to upload one via a GEDCOM.
