After Find Everywhere finds something in a fact note or a person note, you can edit the note by clicking on an Edit link or by clinking on a Note link.
- Clicking the Edit link takes you to the Edit Person screen without any facts highlighted.
- Clicking on the Note link takes you directly into the Note.
If you click on the Edit link, find the note in Edition Person and edit it, then your edit is saved. If you click on the Note link and do an edit, then your Edit is not saved. I don’t think there is any way to save it, so I don’t think there is any possibility that this is user error.
If instead, the edit is in the Description field (which perversely is called Details by Find Everywhere), you can edit the Description field by clicking on an Edit link or by clinking on a Details link.
- Clicking the Edit link takes you to the Edit Person screen without any facts highlighted.
- Clicking on the Details link takes you to the Edit Person screen with the fact highlighted . The highlighting is a really nice feature.
Your edit is saved either way. I suspect that Description field is saved because you are in Edit Person rather than being in the Note Editor.
I suspect that the underlying problem is that the Note Editor doesn’t ever seem to save notes. Rather, the note seems to be saved by Edit Person after you have returned from from the Note Editor. But when getting to the Note Editor from Find Everywhere, Edit Person seems not to be involved in the process and there is no code to do the Save. In the case of the Description field, you remain in Edit Person at all times and the Note Editor is not involved. Therefore, the Save works correctly.
Through all versions of RM all the say back to RM1, I have wished that the note editor had a proper Save and Cancel like every text editor and word processor in the world. But it has never seemed to work that way. Rather, the note is saved “automatically” at some time of RM’s choosing without the user having the control to save or cancel.
Well,in RM8/9/10, you can return from the Note Editor and click the check mark icon or the cancel icon. But I think that’s too late and that the Save or Cancel decision needs to be in the Note Editor. For example, if you click Close from the Note Editor which was invoked from Edit Person, it saves the note automatically and closes Edit Person without an opportunity to cancel. And if you are in the Note Editor which was invoked from Find Everywhere, there actually are Save and Cancel buttons right in the Note Editor. But the Save button doesn’t actually save. I think it would be much better always to have Save and Cancel buttons in the Note Editor and that they would actually Save or Cancel at the time you click them rather than waiting to get back to Edit Person or back to Find Everywhere.
