Can anyone please help me understand what status I need in Ancestry to download a public member tree into RM? Just in simple terms so I can explain to the tree owner.
I want to put his mind at rest, if I can, that his Ancestry data will not be compromised if he gives me sufficient access to download a copy into RM. It looks like he may have to give me Editor status which I think may give me all sorts of editing rights in his Ancestry tree. I have a feeling he may not want that.
I had to request an EDITOR role to download a friend’s public member tree. I found that before and after this latest fix, nothing from media gallery was downloaded (for me as Editor) and the only items that appear in the databasename_media folder are some .HTML files. Don’t know if that’s the norm for tree roles or if it’s related to how the account owner has accumulated their media.
If he won’t allow you to directly TreeShare sync with his tree, he might let you import via a GEDCOM.
You won’t get the source linkages and media, but you would get the people, facts, etc.
So, what is the purpose of downloading the tree? Are you trying to get a full, media-rich copy for doing some reports, etc? Or just want an offline copy of the people to compare against?
You need Editor permission on a shared tree. If he doesn’t want to give it you could have him download RM Essentials (free version) and do the download for you. Then give you the backup with media.
