I’ve noticed something in the weeks since I switched to RM11: When I highlight a fact line on a person’s edit screen, any other personal names on that line disappear. This includes marriages, witnesses (as of censuses), alternate names, and probably others. And only personal names are affected; place names remain visible. It doesn’t affect any functions that I can see, and I don’t know whether it counts as a “bug,” but it’s certainly an annoyance. So, does anyone know – was this deliberate? I mean, there are so many wierdnesses in RootsMagic’s design, I had to ask.
Those names ARE a different text color, than most screen text. Two quick things to try “changing” are in Settings>Display. If they don’t help, maybe posting a screenshot would be helpful.
They are Theme color and/or High contrast grid highlight
Try unticking the “High contrast grid highlight” box in display settings.
This is the result I get - selected:
With it unselected:
There are actually two RM features that are involved in this problem.
The first feature is the Use a higher visibility highlight bar on lists feature that has already been discussed. In theory, it goes into dark mode and everything that was dark on light becomes light on dark and everything is visible. But the implementation of this feature is incomplete because certain bits of data become dark on dark instead of light on dark and therefore disappear. In addition to the bits of data already discussed in this thread, the icons for Note, Source, Media, etc. in the Edit Person screen disappear. In self defense, I turned off the Use a higher visibility highlight bar on lists feature as soon as I tried it and have never used it again. I also requested that it be fixed because I would love to use it.
The second feature is the Display description / relation on separate row in cell option. It defaults to ON. I don’t like the feature and I leave it OFF. I suspect that most RM users like the default and leave it ON, or else don’t realize there is an option and just use ON because it’s the default. But if you turn the option OFF, you likely will not even see the description / relation data on your screen anyway. In that case, you will not notice that the Use a higher visibility highlight bar on lists has obscured the description / relation data. You will only notice that the Use a higher visibility highlight bar on lists causes the icons to be obscured.
Thanks to all of you – turning off the high visibility option took care of it. When I upgraded to RM11, going through all the settings options was the first thing I did. I don’t think I even registered at the time that that was what “high visibility” even meant in this case. But the personal name still ought not to disappear like that, so I hope they have that on the bug list.
I agree with Jerry, and had already turned off the “Second line” thing, too. In the projects I have going (only one of which is my own family), I often have large amounts of data to organize, which means lots of fact lines, and I really hate having to scroll down to see the ones at the bottom.
