The latest version of Roots Magic (12) has introduced a new inefficiency. To access the relationship calculator, I have to now go searching for it. Is there some way to have it always visible in the tool bar? I really don’t like having things buried that I use frequently.
Sorry - my last response was from my phone. I’m using Roots Magic 11 (most recent version). I’d like to be able to place an icon for the relationship calculator onto the tool bar or create a hot key combination for it. I can’t see how to do either. Instead, I have to click on the icon for the command palette and then search on “realationship” to find it. When I’m finished with it, I have to close it until it is needed again.
Why do I want to do this? In most cases, it is to confirm whether or not any relationship exists between me and the person listed.
I see that a relationship is sometimes shown at the top of the upper right box of the Roots Magic window when I select a person’s name in my people list. Can I rely on that determination? If there is no relationship shown, can I be sure there is no relationship to the person I’ve selected?
You are correct that there is not a one click way to get to the Relationship Calculator tool nor to the Set Relationships tool. I find that the easiest way to get to them in RM11 is to click on the Tools item in the Menu bar in all the main “people” kind of views. I’ll post a screenshot below.
The Set Relationships tool sets the relationship you see between a base person and everybody else in the database. You usually choose yourself as the base person, but you don’t have to do it that way. Occasionally I will set one of my kids as the base person to see relationships to my wife’s ancestors as well as my own ancestors. But I run RM with myself as the base person most of the time. I think that’s what you are talking about doing.
By contrast, the Relationship Calculator calculates the relationship between any two people in the database. There is no no requirement that one of the two people be the base person – and just to repeat, the base person is usually yourself but it doesn’t have to be.
There are four differences between the relationships calculated by the two tools.
- Set Relationships always has a base person. It always calculates the relationship between that base person and everybody in your database. The Relationship Calculator always calculates the relationships between two specific people. One of the specific people can be the same as the base person from Set Relationships, but it doesn’t have to be.
- The relationship that you see for the currently selected person in the info panel at the top left or top right of the screen is the relationship from Set Relationships. There may actually be more than one way that the base person is related to the currently selected person. The relationship that is shown may or may not be the relationship that you would consider to be the most important.
- Set Relationships only sets up one way that the base person is related to the currently selected person. The Set Relationships tool shows all the different ways the two people are related.
- The relationship shown by Set Relationships is only as current as the most recent time you have run the Set Relationships tool. If you have added new people to your database since last running the tool, they will not be in the relationship. The relationships shown by the Relationships Calculator will always be up to date.
In answer to your last question, the relationship shown at the top left or top right of the screen which is set by Set Relationships may or may not be the same as what you would see in Relationships Calculator. That’s because Set Relationships only shows one relationship and Relationships Calculator shows all relationships. It’s also because Set Relationships is not always current unless you rerun the Set Relationships tool, and Relationships Calculator is always current.
