Day 3 with RM 10 - Making Progress!

So I’ve kinda sorta figured out how to copy a source template, then edit and modify it. I’m going to give the lumping method a try. Here’s my master source for templates. Nearly everything goes into the citation, with just one master source per census year.

My question is… once I’ve added a fact (census in this example) for the head of household, can I copy and paste that fact to each family member; will it include the citation, and is there any issues doing so?

There are two method and there are pro and cons to either.
Share is one way – meaning there is one fact on “principal” and the you share with a role for each household member it might look something like this:

the counts to right are # of sharee for each – then the who shared with might look like this

the main reason NOT to share for many people is that shareed facts are not accept by some sites such as Ancestry or Family search (not sure why their side prevent shared).

I use lots of other software where shared facts were perfectly fine.
I use shared facts because I am not that concerned with Anc or Family missing the shared facts.
If that is not accepted you must use the copy method. With the shared method you usually would have one citation for the household.

On Citations – there is two forms of copy. Copy and copy & reuse. Familarize yourself with diff

This is most helpful, thank you so much!

also – You may want to listen to other opinions and thought before you decide so you do not have to back pedal. Ultimately one needs to decide what works best for them , their MOO and database.

Yes, the ‘Copy selected fact’ feature is new with RM10 and it’s a really useful tool. It will copy all elements of the fact - Notes, Media, and Source/Citations. The citation(s) will be “reused” as Kevin described above.

You can also use ‘Copy Fact’ to create a fact for the same person. In your example of a census fact, you could copy the census fact to the same person and then change the fact type, to say occupation or perhaps birth, depending upon your needs. I find it’s often easier to “tweak” the copied fact to than create a new fact from scratch.

[edit] if you use Reports, you might want to play around with whether you prefer the role sentences from shared facts or the Notes from a copied fact. Others may have feedback on pros/cons of each.

Thank you! I’m reading the link you posted above now. I may be back with more questions.

Okay, I’ve read more in the manual, searched the forum, and decided shared roles aren’t my cup of tea. What is the downside to copying facts? I can’t seem to find anything listing an issue, other than difficulty marking people to copy.

That’s actually multiple questions, so let’s take them one at a time.

You cannot copy and paste the completed Census fact to each family member. But do not despair. You can accomplish the same thing by a slightly different process. Namely, you can right click the completed Census fact and choose the Copy selected fact option. You then go into a dialog where you can select the individuals to receive a copy of the Census fact, you click OK, and you are done. All the copies you just made of the Census fact will include copies of all the citations associated with the fact and all of the media associated with the fact.

As to issues, I think there are two. Issue #1 is that the copies will be exact copies. In my case, I include a transcription of the census in the note for the Census fact, and I want to the note for each person to be a little different. So after I complete the process of copying the Census fact, I have to go to each person and edit their Census note. I suspect this is not an issue for most users and that they are perfectly happy with exact copies of the Census fact.

Issue #2 is that I find the process of selecting the individuals to receive a copy of the Census fact to be onerous. I have complained about this a lot, and much of the feedback I have received from other users suggests that it’s just me and that they do not find the process to be onerous at all. You will just have to play with it and decide for yourself how hard or easy it is to select the people to receive the copy of the Census fact..

I read all of your previous posts (lengthy!) about this process :).

It’s been close to a week now, with copious amounts of time per day using RM10, and I’m feeling pretty pleased.

I’ve set up a number of master source templates, have about 100 citations entered, setup some groups and color coding, transferred all of my repository info, entered a handful of DNA matches and health issues, transferred some of my person notes, added a few associated people and several tasks, panicked several times, and ran a few reports.

I’m getting pretty comfortable with the software and I think I’ll stick with it. I love, love love the new copy fact, as it will make re-entering all of my census records a gazillion times faster, as I made the choice to input my data manually. I tried a gedcom import, and found it absolutely overwhelming.

nope, it is definitely onerous
