@Rooty and @mscheffler Thanks for your repliesā€” as that was my POINT EXACTLY-- EVERYBODY says BACK IT UP multiple ways BUT except for Renee you all seem to have misunderstood @Oldguyā€™s problemā€¦
He want to RESTORE a database from a backup by using his EXTERNAL DRIVEā€” BUT every time he tries, it tells him FILE NOT FOUND which is why I suggested saving it to the desktop from the external drive BUT I havenā€™t done this for years , so I canā€™t tell him how to save it to the desktopā€¦

I know it canā€™t be that hard-- so he would appreciate any help

To send file from external drive to desktop on a Windows computer:
Go to external drive drive letter, then right click on the file he wants to send to the desktop

From the menu after he has right clicked on the desired file, click on ā€œsend to desktopā€

I suggest he installs RM7 to his new computer, then RESTORE his RM 6 or RM 7 & backup on RM7 on the new computer
After the database is restored i.e. up and running, he can then transfer his data to RM9 if that is what he wants to do

I donā€™t understand the need to send a copy to the desktop first unless it is to see if the file will actually copy.

His backup should be in the format: FILENAME (2022-04-15).rmgb

Hope this is clear.

To OldGuy,

Do you have the RM program up and running in either RM7 or RM9? Are you able to add material to your latest copy of the database? I suspect you may be trying to open or reopen your database from a backup. You always open from the File menu of your database.

Select the file on your external drive and copy it. Then find the desktop or documents folder on your computer and paste that file.
Rootsmagic program may be looking in the wrong place and you could just browse to the file to find and restore it.
Amazon has inexpensive used books on basic computer file and folder concepts for both windows and mac that really help with basic tasks like this.
