Census and Residence (family) - How do you add more than just the spouse?

Family facts in RM are not really family facts. They are couple facts. They do not apply to the children. Think marriage or divorce. A family census fact works the same way. In addition to not applying to the children, family facts in a certain sense don’t even apply to the principles to things like a marriage or a divorce. They only apply to the couple as a whole.

For example, narrative reports have four sections for a couple. The first section is the timeline for either the husband or wife. This section will have birth, death, and burial and will NOT have marriage and divorce. The second section is the timeline for the couple as a whole. This section will have marriage and divorce. The third section is the timeline for the other spouse. This section will have birth, death, and burial and will not have marriage and divorce. The fourth section will have a list of the couple’s children.

A typical question or complaint about this system is why isn’t the marriage for a person in the right order - like after birth and before death. But the marriage isn’t really out of order. It’s just in the couple section of the report rather than being in either individual section of the report.

That gets us back to how to enter census. One way is to enter the individual census fact for each person. The other way is to add the individual census fact for the head of household and then to share the census fact for each family member in the census.

Well, you can actually use Census (Family) fact which will apply to the couple and then you can share this fact with each of the children. Such a shared fact will appear in the individual timeline for each child, but it will appear in the couple timeline for the couple rather than appearing in the individual timeline for each spouse.
