Any Fact has Primary source ticked but this does not stick

Roots Magic 10.0.7.0. Windows 11. When I select a fact and and tick the box to show ‘primary’ source it does NOT stick when I select another fact of the same type for that individual eg. another census or another occupation. I have run the tools and closed and reopened RM several times. Is this a known bug or am I doing something wrong?

Are you clicking the Save icon (it’s a checkmark, too)?

Thanks for quick response.

Yes I am ticking the save icon. I have also tried ticking the icon followed by enter but neither makes a difference.

Enter is not necessary and alternatives to clicking the Save icon can be just clicking onto a different part of the screen than where the change was made (that also does a Save).

Do you have the database open in some other program at the same time -or- is the database located in a folder where you might not have permission (such as logged in as a different username or in a read-only folder)?

No - the database is only on my PC and in its usual RM folder, only backing up to an external hard drive (which is off) not backing up to Dropbox or One Drive or similar. I have just checked and the Roots Magic folder has ‘read only’ ticked (I don’t know if that is usual or not). I’ve unticked read only for the RM folder and all subfolders and tried again by selecting primary for all census facts for an individual. Same result. It does not stick, just shows the last selected item.

Because it’s working for me and there’s not been other recent mentions… I’d first suggest doing a distinct backup, close and restart RM10, run Tools>Database tools (all of them), then retry. If that doesn’t change things, maybe as a test, you could create a new database and add two of a fact type to a single person entry and try ticking Primary for one of them. Last resort being shutdown computer and reboot.

Just to be certain of your description, are you saying that you set a fact of certain type, e.g., Birth, to be Primary, then select another Birth fact for the same person without making it Primary, go back to the one that you had set as Primary and find that its Primary checkbox has been cleared?

Thank you for your advice. I’ll give it a go and report back, but not today.

No, that is not what I was trying to describe BUT thinking about your question makes me realise that I thought the primary tick box was about the type of source used as evidence for that fact and now I realise that is is not that at all, but is about selecting which of a number of the same type of facts is the (to use FTM speak) preferred fact.

I think I have now worked out the answer. Thanks to you and kbens0n for steering me in the right direction.
