Will Shareable Drives work for what I want to do?

There may be no family tree software that meets your expectation. Maybe you should be looking at publishing software for family trees to share a book or website with others. While RM has publishing features for bòoks and websites, they probably aren’t good enough for you. There are purpose-built publishing programs that can work with the RM database or a GEDCOM. Maybe one of those could give you something closer to what you want.

That said, we all face the same problem of passing on our legacy of research to family members who have fleeting interest in their roots.

Thank you; I missed that. It shows relationships, but without much in the way of context. A scrollable “Kinship View” showing one’s entire family for three or so generations would be an excellent default view to see when opening the app. Maybe that’s not possible, but if it were, it’d get my vote.

Thanks. That’s an interesting thought, which I’ll look into. If I may ask, are there any in particular you could point me to?

“The database can be used either on a Mac or Window computer, but the program files for the Shareable Drive and RM To-Go Essentials are specific to the OS.” That is a shame. I use strictly the macOS but most of the relatives are Window users. It seems that since the software to read the file is read only, that there should be a way to either provide both or have a selection which stripped down version is used. Maybe that could be included as a suggestion for a future update? Seems that restricting it to only the OS being used to create it, limits the availability to share your files.

It needs the operating system to put the right files on to run. You could share the database with the family member and have them download the correct RM Essential version to run it.
