Questions about RM on Mac (from Win10)

Hi - I haven’t been here in a while. Up until last year I used RM9 on Win10, but I’ve since crossed over to macOS 15. I’d like to find out what I need to do if I want to pick up where I left off but on my Mac. I’ve looked for a FAQ on this unsuccessfully, so I have some questions:

  1. Can I take my latest Win10 .rmtree file and open/import it in the Mac version?

  2. Does it matter for backwards compatibility if I stay with RM9, or must I get RM10?

  3. Would I need to buy RM for Mac, or could I download it and use my RM9 Windows reg key with it?

  4. Would buying it constitute being a new user or would it be an upgrade since I purchased RM9 for Windows?

  5. Are there any media/graphics issues I might have to contend with?

  6. Do USB Shareable Drives made on a Mac still not work on Windows?

If you can provide any answers or additional info - I’m sure I haven’t thought of everything - I’d appreciate it very much. Thank you!

  1. Yes, just open it, but before you do anything you must run the tool to re-index the database because there is a minor difference in how the indexes are created. You might have to fix any broken media links due to differences in the computer file systems.
  2. You can stay with RM9 but I suggest that you upgrade since RM10 has some fixes that are MAC specific. You would qualify for the upgrade price.
  3. Download RM9 as your purchase is for either version.

#6. No, the Shareable Drive and RM To-Go are specific to the operating system they were created on. You can copy the database and media from the Shareable Drive, but you would need to recreate it on the Mac.

Thanks! So if I use Windows to update the Shareable Drives, will the Mac’s RM10 .rmtree file import into RM9 on my old Win10 machine?

The database file can be taken off the Shareable Drive but it would only work in the version it was created in. You wouldn’t be able to use the RM10 .rmtree file inside of RM9, because it has a different file format. If it was a RM9 file it could be opened and converted in RM10.

Thank you. So if I understand you correctly, to continue using Shareable Drives on other (my kids’) Windows computers, I’d have to either put RM9 on my Mac or install RM10 on both my Mac and my old Windows machine. :thinking:

Yes, if you need a Windows version of the Shareable Drive you need to create it on a Windows computer. Same setup for the Mac setup.
