New user here. I was hoping to use the free version of RM10 to download a tree from Ancestry and upload it to another Ancestry account, as was discussed in this thread: Transfer tree to new Ancestry account
I’m concerned about losing the fact descriptions from my Ancestry Tree in the upload (for instance, under someone’s death, I may have listed the hospital or manner of death). I have a lot of descriptions, as well as “custom events.”
I know there will be some changes when it comes to media, but will my descriptions upload? Are there any other changes I should expect? Will profile pictures transfer over?
Any insight is appreciated. Tree has over 600 people, so if descriptions are gone, it will feel like I’m starting over.
I’m unsure how complete the download to RM will be if you have “custom” stuff in the Ancestry Tree. You might even be alarmed by the apparent losses you initially see in RM because some fact type in it by default does not have its description enabled. That’s easily corrected by changing the setting for that fact type.
As for the upload, I’m guessing that if it downloads it will upload but your mileage may vary…
If you entered text in the description field of a fact it will upload to an Ancestry tree using TreeShare. Profile pictures that are the primary photo for a person will also upload. Custom facts should upload.
All of your custom facts should download from Ancestry BUT you will need to define the sentence for each of them BEFORE uploading again to Ancestry…
If you use Associations in RM, those will NOT upload to Ancestry.. if you share a fact in RM, the fact will show up on the original person in Ancestry BUT nobody else-- so when you download it again from Ancestry–all your shared facts are gone-- need to use copy fact in RM instead of share.
As everyone has already said if you used description on Ancestry in a fact, just edit the fact in RM by clicking on description–define the sentence as to where description should in the sentence — your info should automatically appear once you say OK to all your changes but there is a limit on Ancestry as to how many words you can have between description and notes-- think it is 100 words but not sure – so for example say in the 1861 census, I used description to say that Mel’s sister Hannah and family lived next door to Mel-- then in my notes copied the 1861 Census for Mel, his wife and 7 kids–well when I upload it from RM part of that census will be missing on Ancestry as it exceeds their limit–seems like I only got as far as the 2nd child..
