RM9 version 9.1.6.0–Windows 11–no dual monitor–NOT USING ANY CLOUD SERVICES…
I have suspected this for a while BUT really couldn’t be sure of it till AFTER I had moved my files to RM 10…
At some point, RM 9 has taken citations and places from several of my databases and add them to another ( probably more than 1 database BUT I can only be sure of as of right now)…
To explain–I have a test database that I use just for testing things out-- this was my place list as May 6 2024 ( I download a gedcom from Ancestry but my RM 8 and RM7 files show abt the same amount)
15 places total---- my RM 9 file dated June 13 2024 shows
That’s a heck of a difference- especially considering that all most all my places were addresses in London , England- same on Sources-- I only had 3 as of May 6 in there as I haven’t been messing with sources/citations in the test date base …
When I look at the places and sources/ citations that are now in the test database, I can see that they came from abt 4 of the 5 databases I use on a regular basis-- BUT NOT ALL THE PLACES IN THESE OTHER DATABASES-- I have wondered abt this in the past as I would make a CUSTOMIZED FACT in my test database and then weeks later would notice it was in one or more of my other databases…
So any ideas-- AND BEFORE some body says, YOU IMPORTED SOME LISTS----I DID NOT–if I had my place list would be closer to 1000 as there are very few places the same in my 5 databases— I always enter the info for places and sources / citations manually–the only thing I have ever imported was abt 10 of the USER SOURCE TEMPLATES which were download from the RM 9 help files and then imported 1 by 1…
Without knowing the live cycle of the database difficult to speculate.
What I can say moving from an FTM (gedcom) to RM8, I notice strange things with citations, sources that were compounded when I tried to Merge duplicates.
Not sure if you linked or relinked sources / citations? Maybe someone has had a similar experience and can offer some insight
Sorry—Guess I should have said-- the original database in RM 9 was totally built in RM 8 then moved to RM 9–I do understand what you are talking abt when moving from other software to RM 7 as I ended up with 2 birth, 2 death and 2 burial facts…
I have also never merged any other database into this–nor downloaded info from Ancestry/ Familysearch as it is totally all made up info—any copies I made ( Ancestry–back to RM 7 etc) were by gedcom and had different names
and never linked or relinked sources / citations BUT THANKS for the thoughts
That’s a mystery. I can’t imagine how the application would add things on its own but you have observed results that you are certain are not of your own making. But your reference database has a place named Never Married which is suggestive of something out of place even in it. And if RM8 has been in the chain, …
Thanks Tom --I actually did make the place Never Married in that RM 9 test database when a couple of times people had questions or mentioned problems with places/ place details etc–just checking to see how it turned out…
and yes RM 8 has been in the chain…
It’s actually no big deal now that you can use a drop and drag in RM 10 that will clean a lot of that up BUT then I might lose other info I want-- enhanced properties in RM 10 might also do the trick-- just wondering why it happened between May and June
File, Import Data, Import Lists is about the only way you can add Sources and places to a database, without importing people with them into the database.
Thanks Renee-- I agree with you-- using IMPORT LISTS or importing a person SHOULD be the only way to add sources and places BUT that’s NOT what happened here-- since this is a test database – all info is fictional and manually added as far as sources, peoples, places (everything)—had not imported people, places or sources…
BUT somehow my sources went from 3 to 49 and my places went from 15 to 322…
On places, I can identify that there are bits and pieces from at least 4 to 5 different databases—when you import a list of places, you don’t get to pick and choice which places you import–it’s all or nothing
This is my original list
This is now a part of the list for my test database–10 extra places between London, England and Mo, Luebberring, Franklin Co., Mo
and this is part of the places from my dad’s paternal database–
so IF I had accidentally imported my places from my dad’s paternal line ( just in this one part), there should be 15 new places BUT there are only 5-- the other 5 from this section in the test database came from other databases–same with sources-- I can identify where bits and pieces came from 4 or 5 different files…
doubt if we ever figure out what happened— and with such a small database (166 people). it’s NOT that bad BUT it MIGHT be for a person who has several databases MUCH LARGER than this–so guess it’s just an FYI-- this could happen to others…
If unexpected items are unused, Import Lists is the only way in or the uses have been deleted. If they are used, then people were entered or imported or drag’n’dropped from another database. You might get a clue when they came in by inspecting the Date last edited on the People List. Better yet would be inspection of UTCModDate on each record in almost very table. You might find it jogs your memory of actions you had taken that could have brought data over. For example, if you have more than one database open, it can be confusing which one a window is from. That could lead to dragging people onto the wrong database. It’s unimaginable that the application could somehow go rogue without throwing errors or rendering the database unusable.
