NOTE:
RootsMagic does recognize when Birth fact does not exist or Birth Date is blank and will use an existing dated Christening fact as basis for calculating Age (at) events.
The christening data will not âfillâ the birth data. But RM will use the christening date in lieu of the birth date for age calculations in case the christening event exists and the birth event does not exist. RM does not make the same accommodation for baptism events, even if the baptism is an infant baptism. Indeed, the very term âinfant baptismâ is very controversial because some religious traditions perform infant baptisms and some do not.
I try always to have an actual Birth fact, even if the date is approximate or an estimate. For example, I recently ran into some christening records from colonial Virginia where every child in the family was christened on the same date. The actual ages of the children at the time of their christening varied from newborn to about age 8. This was located in what was then the western frontier in the Shenandoah Valley. My guess is that there was a minister in town, which might have been a rare event on the frontier. So the family took advantage of the ministerâs presence to have all the children christened at the same time. In this particular case, that doesnât make the christening date into a very good surrogate for the childâs birth date.
