Windows11, RootsMagic11. Have had multiple problems with reports in the past - this is just the newest. Cannot print an individual Summary, Instead I get the message “Cannot create texture for ‘TCanvasD1D’. Then the printer prints one blank page. Since I’ve never attempted any such texture nor how this would even be possible this warning is very odd. Lucklily I can save the report and then print it out. It just seems to me that all the problems with reports they would eventually be fixed!
that error is not common to most users – but does happen. You did not mention your specs of OS , version and so on. Below are some thing to try - if they do not work - I suggest opening support ticket:
TCanvasD1D error
Here are the most effective ways to fix this:
1. Match Paper Sizes (The “Magic” Fix)
The most common cause is a mismatch between what the software expects and what the printer is set to.
-
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
-
Select your printer and click Printer properties (or Printing preferences).
-
Ensure the Paper Size (e.g., Letter or A4) matches exactly what is selected inside the application you are trying to print from.
-
Note: Even a tiny discrepancy, like a “Custom” size vs. “A4,” can trigger a Canvas error.
2. Reset the Print Spooler
If the print job is “stuck” in a way that’s confusing the software’s graphics engine:
-
Press
Win + R, typeservices.msc, and hit Enter. -
Find Print Spooler in the list.
-
Right-click it and select Stop.
-
Navigate to
C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERSand delete all files in that folder. -
Go back to the Services window, right-click Print Spooler, and select Start.
3. Update or Swap the Printer Driver
The “Canvas” error is a Direct2D/DirectX-related issue. If your current driver is outdated, it may not support the graphical calls the software is making.
-
Update: Go to the manufacturer’s website (HP, Epson, Canon, etc.) and download the latest “Full Feature” driver rather than relying on the basic Windows Update driver.
-
Alternative: If you are using a “Class Driver” or “WSD” port, try reinstalling the printer using a Standard TCP/IP port with the manufacturer-specific driver.
4. Check Graphics Acceleration
Since this is a drawing error (TCanvas), sometimes your PC’s graphics card is the culprit.
-
If the application you’re using has a “Disable Hardware Acceleration” or “Use GDI instead of Direct2D” setting, toggle it.
-
Ensure your GPU drivers (Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD) are up to date, as Direct2D relies on them to render the print canvas.
- Save report to a .PDF or .DOCX file
- Open and Print that file outside of RootsMagic
(This error occurs sometimes when RootsMagic attempts to call out to the operating system with both the print parameters and the file info to attempt a combination operation of saving the filetype followed by opening that filetype using the default program that the operating system has associated with it. Sometimes the print parameters conflict with that "combo-operation"
Some people have gotten this msg and the suggestion is to save as a PDF or DOCX file then print
I get this same odd message when I copy the memorial text information from the bottom of a Find A Grave page and try to just do a straight paste into the note field for a person. I do not get it if I do a paste as plain text. Also on Windows 11 and RM11. Did not have this issue until me very recent “upgrade” to Windows 11.
@ngwehner Exactly what are you trying to copy and how are you copying and pasting it-- right click or control +c and control+ v, or using paste under the 3 dots?
I don’t get that message and had no problems if I copy the whole memorial or the body of the memorial such as this:
Abraham
Birth unknown
Death 14 Jan 1842
Sainte Genevieve, Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri, USA
Burial Memorial Cemetery Sainte Genevieve, Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri, USA
Memorial ID 279824203 · [View Source]
If I try to copy the info right above the source citation such as this
- Created by: Margie Buchheit Hartle
- Added: Dec 22, 2010
- Find a Grave Memorial ID: 63240285
- and use Control + c and Control + V, I sometimes get this message
edit-- I have noticed that after getting this message. if i click in the note field the info does appear…
When RM8 first came out, we were told the only way you add a note was to use PASTE AS TEXT only under the 3 dots but know there has been some improvement..
Keith made this suggestion in Dec 2025 and maybe it will help you
I’ve had this error printing from RM9 for quite a while. I was rather hoping it would have been fixed in newer versions. Saving as PDF and printing that is a workaround, but somewhat disappointing that it hasn’t been fixed yet
