I have been a RM user since I bought version 1 from Bruce at a conference in 2002. I got frustrated with the RM 8 issues and stopped using RM for a few years. I’m back with RM11 and I’m really enjoying it.
With that said, I’m having trouble with the TreeShare. I exported my tree from FTM2024 as a GEDCOM and imported it into RM11. I’ve made some changes (merged duplicate citations, added DNA information, etc…). I then tried to upload my new RM11 db to a new tree on Ancestry. It ran forever (multiple hours) uploading media (9094 media items). It got to 99% on uploading the media and got stuck. It sat at 99% overnight and still went nowhere. I had to use Task Manager to close the program. I’ve tried this twice with the same result. I have run all the database tools with no issues reported.
Are there any known issues with RM11 TreeShare? Does anyone have any thoughts on what else I might try?
Also, I would love to have a workflow where I have my Ancestry tree in both FTM 2024 and RM11. Both software programs have their pros and cons. I would love to take advantage of the pros in each without having to do dual entry. I notice RM11 has an import from other programs, but for FTM is says version 2014 and earlier. Are there any plans to be able to import from FTM2024?
I suspect that answer is going to be no! FTM decided to encrypt their database when it left Ancestry control. RM would have no way of unencrypting it to import it into RM. I think FTM did this for two reasons, to keep people from manipulating the database outside of the program and to prevent importing it into other programs easily.
Sure they do, otherwise when you install 11, you would not be able to pull in your RM 10/9/8 file. They also import version 7 and earlier with a few clicks. That is direct import. You don’t need to export a RM file to GED and import it as such.
There is no reason to have any such idea as Rooty is wrong. Rooty hasn’t been able to pull off the TreeShare and has griped about it for some time. If it were a problem other than with his file, then we all would be experiencing issues…and we all aren’t. Rooty is an edge case, not the general rule.
Support can test the upload to a new Ancestry tree for you. Just open a support ticket with a backup. One thing that sometimes help is moving any HTML file out of your media folder so the links break in RM. Ancestry no longer accepts HMTL files and it can choke when trying to upload them, instead of just skipping them. That may or may not be your case.
Many users have reported tree upload failure to ancestry over several versions of RM despite my tree being only 400 people. All get the same stall out failure.
I had the same issue with RM11. It stalled on media and I have to do a force shutdown of RM. Since it issue was media, I broke the link to all my media. It still found a few files in my one drive folder. Which I had uninstalled. Once I deleted those few photos in my one drive folder treeshare worked just fine.
Also if you can’t uninstall one drive, you will need to uninstall copilot first. Then you can uninstall one drive.
Thank you for your reply. I have my media on my local C drive and I have the backup set to one drive. I am curious about whether there are a particular few media files causing the issue though. I will have to take a good look at what I have in my media folder. Interestingly, my tree in FTM (synced to the same Ancestry tree) has 9094 media files, but when I download that same tree to RM11, it’s reporting 9398 media items.
I took Renee’s advice and downloaded my Ancestry tree to a new RM11 file. That worked as far as no errors, number of people, etc., but I’m noticing that changed Citation Detail is not coming down to RM11. For example, on Ancestry:
I had made that edit in FTM and synced it to Ancestry. As you can see it shows in Ancestry, but doesn’t come down to RM. I tried editing the citation on Ancestry (removed the middle initial from Susie Troth’s name in the citation detail). After saving the change, I went back to TreeShare, but it’s not showing a difference for the 1910 event.
Is it also a known issue that changes to the citation detail on Ancestry won’t come down to RM?
It appears to be an Ancestry record/source that you modified. I’ve been told it doesn’t allow us to change them. Not sure how FTM managed it. But, it sounds like it’s sending the original Ancestry source. It would be interesting to see how it downloads as a GEDCOM from Ancestry.
I exported the tree from Ancestry as a GEDCOM and looked up this same person. I see the changed entry in the GEDCOM. Here’s a snippet. Admittedly, I don’t work with GEDCOMs much so let me know if you need to see more of this entry.
