I’m really surprised that you and @kevinm have been able to download media via TreeShare that your lapsed subscription does not allow you to see on the Ancestry website. That seems illogical and maybe unintended. If you add more Ancestry sources on your now free subscription, is their media available through TreeShare?
I typically don’t login to ancestry when my membership is inactive except for the occasional treeshare push of a new person or event. That said, I don’t believe there’s any way to add additional Ancestry sources to your tree when your membership is inactive. The ancestry UI is locked down and you can only download information that you previously paid to gain access to. Ancestry does allow you to contribute new information ( by way of a treeshare up to your ancestry tree as a non-ancestry source).
If the document you are looking at is free such as the 1880 census, you can add that on Ancestry on an expired subscription-- you can also add everyone else who is on that document—parents, siblings etc–add the document to them and fact/ citation and they will all download but you can’t add a paid source as Kevin said.
I was also surprised that you could download source documents and see the media that were done before your account expired
I would like to follow up on last month’s discussion of the issue I had faced with source images that SEEMED to disappear from my RM10 file on the day my Ancestry subscription ran out. On that same day, while kind of upset, I resubscribed to Ancestry, and everything returned to normal. In preparation for the expiration of my additional paid month of Ancestry, I created two new versions of my tree via TreeShare in RootsMagic. One I allowed to remain connected, and the other I disconnected from the Ancestry Tree. I am happy to report that my Ancestry sub has run out, but I did not suffer the same scary issue as before. This test of integrity between Ancestry and RM10 confirms that it’s completely safe for me to keep my tree connected via TreeShare in RootsMagic while unsubscribed to Ancestry’s World Explorer (I did keep ProTools). I have no regrets with paying for the extra month of Ancestry for $39. I made good use of it and solved a lot of errors. I now have confidence moving forward and am thankful for these tools that help keep my precious information well organized and documented! ![]()
