Space bar not working when typing notes? I use an iMac RM11

While typing notes the space bar will not work. I am using RM11. IMac with latest version.

Being that such an error would trigger many reports here, it isn’t likely a problem with the current version of RM. Upgrade if you haven’t already. Or, close out the program completely and then re-open. Last resort, reboot your machine.

Check the batteries in your keyboard too.

I purchased a new keyboard. Still space bar did not work in RM11, it would work in my pages app however. Thank you for offering ideas.

Thank you for your responses.
Reboot did not fix the problem. New keyboard did not help either. Updating RM11 also did not help. When I double tap the space bar my person edit page enlarges & shrinks back down. The space bar works fine in other programs.
When I go to other person pages a blue box appears when I press the space bar. Then it disappears.

I have been playing with my RM11 updated program and found if I press the shift key while pressing the space bar I can get a space to insert between words. ???

Not a Mac user, but the internet says:
On a Mac, double-tapping the space bar is a default setting that automatically adds a period followed by a space, allowing for faster sentence ending. This feature can be toggled on or off in System Settings under Keyboard > Input Sources by adjusting the “Add period with double-space” option. That may be something RM chokes on, but single spacing words shouldn’t be a complexity.

The screenshot is out of focus (for me) but I see a blue rectangular outline towards the left side, but it spans completely out of the open child window and to the left over top of the Main window beneath… so not acting upon the Edit Person window, but rather the whole program screen or whole Mac desktop screen, maybe? Looks like an Apple feature or function being activated unintentionally somehow.

I did go into systems>keyboard>input Sources. I didn’t see “add period with double space” option. I changed the choice from change input source to do nothing. This gives me a new situation where if I press the space bar it minimizes the screen. I think you are on to something and a setting here might be helpful. I just need to find out what that setting might be. Thank you. It’s funny how the space bar works fine in other application programs.

Interesting development with that change. I had quoted Google AI and it also had said it was for these operating systems (Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia).

Im using Sequoia. I thank you for your help. I haven’t used AI much. Maybe I should try it. Rootsmagic has not been a quick learn for my 76 year old brain. It’s so time consuming but worth it.

I searched a little more in-depth:

Removing Blue Boxes in macOS (Accessibility)

Follow these steps:

  • Path: Go to System Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.

  • Action: Click the “i” (information) button next to “Full Keyboard Access”.

  • Tweaks: Adjust the appearance, visibility, and color of the focus box, or disable it entirely to stop it from appearing when pressing keys.

  • Alternative: Turn off “Full Keyboard Access” completely if you do not use it. (I believe “Full Keyboard Access” means advanced shortcut keys for accessibility features for handicapped/visually impaired, etc.)

Thank you!!!
It was the turning off the full keyboard that worked. I must complement you for your prompt help.
Have a great week.
