I’m copying people from one database to another in RM10, let’s say from DB2 to DB1. In many cases, the same individual exists in both databases, but has more information in DB2 than in DB1. So I check the box at the bottom of the copy screen to indicate that this is the same individual and they should be merged. RM10 says that one person has been copied. But when I open the edit person screen for the individual in DB1 to check, none of the additional facts for that person from DB2 appear. Earlier in the day, when I was copying groups of people, the process seemed to be working fine – all facts were copied over. Does it just not work with individuals? I’ve opened and closed the program, run the database tools a few times, no joy.
I cannot repeat your results. When I dragged and dropped exactly one person from one database to the other and when the person had extra facts in the first database, the extra facts did show up in the second database. So it appears to be working correctly for me. Windows 10, RM 10.0.2.0 64 bit.
I realize I left out one important factor. I’m on a Mac.
I did some more experimenting and realized the facts that didn’t copy over were marriage facts, even though the two individuals were linked as the parents of children in DB1. That still doesn’t make any sense to me. Why wouldn’t the marriage date and place information copy over from one database to another when the two individuals are already linked?
Marriage facts are family facts (also called couple facts). They will never be included by a drag and drop when you drag and drop just one person. However, Marriage facts and other couple facts such as Divorce will be included by a drag and drop when your drag and drop is expanded to include both partners to the Marriage or Divorce. Or at least that’s the way it’s supposed to work, and I have never seen it fail.
That may or may not seem like a picayune distinction. But even though it may appear that facts such as Marriage and Divorce belong to a person when you look at the facts in the Edit Person screen, they don’t. Instead, such facts belong to the couple and then each of the two individuals are linked to the couple.
Therefore, if John Doe and Jane Smith are a couple and if you add a Marriage fact to John Doe, it might look like it has also added a Marriage fact to Jane Smith. Indeed, you can see the Marriage fact if you open the Edit Person screen for Jane Smith. But it’s not like John Doe has his own copy of the Marriage fact and Jane Smith has her own copy of the Marriage fact. There is only one copy of the Marriage fact and it is linked to John-Doe-and-Jane-Smith. Then, John Doe is linked to John-Doe-and-Jane-Smith and Jane Smith is linked to John-Doe-and-Jane-Smith.
That makes perfect sense. Thank you!
