RM 10: Windows vs Mac

I am using RM 10 on a Windows computer and I am thinking of getting a Mac. Are there any program features in the Windows version which are either not implemented, or are uniquely having issues, in the Mac version?

Thanks,
Jeff

Shouldn’t be any difference between using the Windows or Mac version.

There are differences (or were?) at least in the import options. In this community windows users told us Mac users, there were special options to directly import foreign databases instead of using a gedcom-file as substitute. Mac → gedcom only.

There are import option differences even between the Windows 32-bit and 64-bit versions. GEDCOM is always available.

Probably no significant opertional differences for RM10. You will have to give up all that free windows malware and clumsy interface issues.

I’d love to see performance data for RM on Windows vs intel MacOS vs Mchip MacOS.
Some people have complained about slow app launching on Mchip MacOS, but the real issue is how does it run with a database opened.

Malware, Windows update failures etc. Too many headaches.

On a M2 macbook air 24GB ram 512SSD 85% free RM10 is very slow to open but once open runs OK. It does idle at about 15% CPU while all non-intel code programs use 1% or less. Bruce could provide universal code like every other mac app for better performance.

Jeff; macmost.com has useful short videos and a guide to the os differences. M4 macbook airs are expected next spring and will run all apple intelligence features.

Do other intel-only code apps also use lots of CPU on idle?
(I wish I had access to a Mac, My mac experience only goes from 6800=>PPC=>intel)
Have you checked the Embarcadero site to see whether they have a Mchip compiler for Object Pascal?

I have no other intel only apps. All mac software I use has switched to code for apple silicon AMD integrated chips. The last intel only app was my Doxie Go scanner software which even at 1.2 GB used little cpu. It seems to be easy to recode from obsolete Intel code.

If you use shortcut keys regularly prepare for quite a difference in those, but otherwise all works just fine on my MacbookPro.
And sometimes you have to use the Windows CTRL+ … instead of the Mac CMD +… ,to get formatting to work as these are not consistently Mac or Windows based I find.

Thanks all for your inputs. TBD if I’m going to make the move to Mac.

If RM is key to your decision you may want to wait to see if Bruce actually delivers a Universal or apple silicon code version before Apple stops supporting Intel code with Rosetta 2 app. For overall performance and ease of use macs with modern chips win in all aspects except as room heaters and malware catchers.

FYI here is a screenshot of CPU and RAM usage on my M4 MBA 24 GB ram with FTM 2024 and RM 10 (intel only code) open and idle.

Looks like FTM might not be constantly checking various online genealogy sites for web hints and/or new data being reported as available for sync to the database.

FTM is linked to Ancestry for new hints and and only RM 10 (intel code only) uses such a large % of CPU when idle. Seems unlikely to blame constant rapid checking with Ancestry since RM can’t even upload a small tree with media on a fast connection. I suspect less than optimal coding for the mac OS along with intel only code.

Early in the 2020 introduction of Apple silicon many major Intel programs actually ran faster despite Rosetta translation reflecting the performance leap from Intel chips.

RM is checking FamilySearch, MyHeritage, Findmypast and Ancestry. Besides, showing percentage of use is a good thing. That is the whole purpose of the instrumentation of the CPU. It’s intended for understanding processor cores or threads UTILIZATION. It would be silly and stupid to have a screen where all the numbers beside all processes was 1. RM cannot and does not ever freeze or slow down your computer. Instead the computer adjusts between all the UTILIZATIONs to allocate resources or page/swap files out of memory. It a red herring argument.

In my case only ancestry hints are enabled. My point is that RM uses vastly more cpu capacity than any other program for which I blame less than optimal design and intel coding.
