I have been using RootsMagic for a few years. I have version 11.2 Since the last update, the program crashes when I try to do multiple searches. I am in the process of updating everyone in my program, which has about 15,000 people, with new information & fixing incorrect info. I am using newspaper articles and do a different search about every 15 minutes. I have been doing multiple searches daily for years, with no issue. But since the last update, the program crashes - the screen goes blank, then pops up with random boxes of people, then stops. Is anyone else having this issue?
There have not been any reports here in the forum, yet. Are you capable of capturing a couple screenshots of your onscreen errors or symptoms and uploading them here?
Here are some additional questions about your environment.
- Windows or Mac?
- If Windows, is it 32-bit RM or 64-bit RM? Windows itself will be 64 bit, but RM could be either.
- Does it crash on the first search you do after starting RM? Or is it more like the third or fourth search you do after starting RM? Or is it more like the tenth or twentieth search?
- Exactly what are you looking for with your search? Is it an Advanced Search or a Find Everywhere search or what kind of search? And what is the data you are looking for?
- Exactly where is your data base stored? By that, I mean the full file path. For example, I have a database called jerryrm11_test.rmtree which is stored in C:\Users\jbryan\OneDrive\rm11\ And yes I know that OneDrive is a bad place to store RM databases.
I will get a couple of screen shots when it happens again. Of course, right now it is behaving and not crashing. This has been happening for a few weeks.
Jerry - Windows 64 bit, 11 Home - crashed with multiple searches, I do searches a lot to add info to existing people -
today it crashed after the 2nd search each time I restarted the computer & program - searching for people’s names with regular search -
database is on my computer hard drive, I backup to an external hard drive, my file is over 51,00 kb - I never backup to OneDrive
Which "regular search?
- Search box at top of People View?
- Search box in the Index tab in the bottom of the sidebar?
- Main search tab on the left side of the screen, then Basic Search?
- Main search tab on the left side of the screen, then Advanced Search?
- Main search tab on the left side of the screen, then Find Everywhere?
Which folder on your computer’s hard drive? It actually can matter. For example, your Documents folder seems safe enough. But sometimes your Documents folder can be synced by OneDrive without your knowledge or consent.
Have you run the database tools under File, Tools?
thank you, I ran the tools - hopefully this will help
rzamor1 thank you for the suggestion, it has been 4 days since I ran the database tools and the program seems more stable. It started to crash, but then adjusted itself, the screen went from multiple images of people’s facts back to just the one person I was working on. All seems great, thank you
