Problem list - 'born before parents marriage'

I know I can check ‘not a problem’, in this situation, but I am wondering if this should even be appearing in the list.

I have a person that is being marked as ‘born before parents marriage’. This person’s mother was previously married, and after his father died, his mother remarried. I have the relationship set to ‘step’ as even though the person went by his step-father’s surname, I believe (but not sure) that he was adopted by the ‘step’ father. I did try changing the type to ‘adopted’ to see if that corrected the ‘problem’ but it didn’t.

I am questioning if this should actually have been flagged as a problem. Yes, he was born before his mother married his step/adoptive father, but that (to me) is ok as long as you have the type’s correctly set. The same situation should apply if a person was born and the adoptive parents were married but after the child was born, but before the child was adopted.

Is there a specific way to change the settings for this situation?

Opinions?

Thanks

You could disable the “Born before Parents Marriage” Problem

In the Settings - General - Click on Problem Options at the bottom

Yes, I could, but then I would get the problem when it is actually a problem. I know I can check ‘not a problem’, it’s just I don’t think that this should show as a problem at all.

It won’t take into consideration the parent relationships, like step/adopted. So it will consider it a problem until you mark it not one.

Do you have marriage dates for each of the mom’s marriages?

This problem, without knowing any dates, tells me that there is a marriage date for the mom & stepdad so the kids birthday would be before their marriage and thus trigger the “problem”.

That’s too bad. I think that it should account for that.

Yes, I have good dates for the marriages.

I think you are asking it to guess or assume it is not a problem with info it was not provided and does not have. I suppose you could have an enhancement to ignore non birth parent or similar. If you would like something like that – you could ask for the details to have this screen tweaked to what you need.

That would work, although as a retired programmer this option would be complex (changing display, editing etc). I see another option of the code checking if both parents are set to ‘birth’, rather than just the parents marriage date. Thanks for the comment

I agree the option do not always fit what is needed or desired.

I would venture a guess that there’s a pretty fair portion of folks who do not even use that feature. It doesn’t appear in many lists/reports and doesn’t transfer well into or out of this program.
