Is it appropriate to use Place Detail to document a company name?
Seems reasonable. In the online help for the Place Details List the example shown lists a "Baptist Church Parsonage as a place name.
So, it I’d say yes to being an appropriate use, creating a place with the name of the company and all the relevant details like latitude & longitude filled in.
Although there could be some uses that might not be recommended – it is mostly up to user I would say. Company name, Hospital, School or Funeral home for example would all be appropriate uses.
For Cemeteries I use 5th place ONLY and use Place details for all NON Cemetery.
Eventually, since I use 5th place for cemetery I plan to use the place details to geo code the place details of headstone or marker.

Sorry to be off on a tangent here but seeing you mentioned Cemeteries, I believe that it’s the only time in our timelines that we need to have another level beyond place details. The cemetery has an address that I believe should be in place details, then if we could get another level down to enter the plot/memorial address within that cemetery, that would be perfect. Everything would be kept together to your point, whether on not an exact location is known.
was not necessarily mentioned for anyone particular to use. For me Place details would not work well for my purposes due to the way gedcom is handled. Using a 5th place works perfectly for Cemeteries however. Which is why I only use it for cemeteries.
