Perry County, Indiana vs Perry County, Indian Territory

I was born and raised in Tell City, Perry, Indiana, United States. I have many ancestors, cousins, etc. who I know only that they were born in Perry County, Indiana, United States, however, RM is usually wanting to change it to Perry County, Indian Territory, United States. This has irritated me for many years (thru many versions). Is there some way to correct this?

If you disable County Check, RM will let you enter anything.

Any event (fact) date before December 11, 1816 (when Indiana joined the Union) is going to intervene with that notice about Indian Territory. It simply was not a state, yet.

Actually, it’s Indiana Territory, not Indian Territory.

Actually, these entries I made today were anywhere between 1843 and 1929. Actually, it’s INDIAN TERRITORY. Why should I have to disable CountyCheck?

You don’t have to:

I did a couple more with Indiana counties and it did the same thing. Do I have to change every Indiana county to get the result I should be getting to begin with?

County check only uses INDIANA TERRITORY (not Indian) FROM 4 Jul 1800 to 11 Dec 1816. If you are seeing anything else it is probably because you have a place in your place list that has Indian Territory instead of the correct Indiana Territory for Perry County. Any time you enter Perry County, I….., in the place field, it will suggest anything starting with those letters. You need to correct it in the place list.

The only Indian in my place list is Indian River. It is not showing up as the place is entered (it indeed shows the correct place), but when I exit the individual’s page, it suggests Perry County, Indian Territory, United States and wants to know if I want to keep the original place. If you click on the “i” information tab, it says something relating to the Arkansas Territory, Oklahoma Territory, and says that the Indian Territory existed between 26May1824 and 16Nov1907. ???

First, remember that Indian Territory covers a lot of area to the west and as states were added, said territory grew smaller. If you note the end dated given by county check, it just happens to be the date that Oklahoma entered the union which is when the last bit known as Indian Territory disappeared. In this particular case it would appear that County Check needs to update their data. Since a third party provides that functionality, there isn’t much that RM is going to be able to do about it.
